👉 How to get out of your own way
Jan 21, 2022 3:51 pm
Happy Friday, !
If I had a dollar for every time someone said to me "I just need to get out of my own way," I would be on a tropical beach, in the sun, on a lounge chair, having a cupcake right now.
These 10 words are the MOST common words in my business.
We ALL get in our own way and we do it in all kinds of fun and exciting ways.
- We delay and wait.
- We self-sabotage.
- We hide and avoid.
- We try to make it perfect and do it 'right'.
- We tell ourselves stories about all the things we're not doing right, the ways we aren't good enough, and/or the ways we're failing.
I'm sure you have other ways you can add to this list, but I think you've got the idea.
Getting in your own way is NORMAL.
We ALL live in our heads, 24 hours a day, with all of our best and worst qualities.
And we all have a hard time seeing the best in ourselves.
In so many ways, this is just what it is to be human.
But if this is the hand we've been dealt - what the heck do we do about it?
How do we GET OUT of our own way?
Here are TWO options:
1. Learn to be on to yourself.
This is likely not what you want to hear, but the simplest way to get out of your own way is to learn to notice and be on to your own bullshit.
And the most effective way I know to do this is with a journal.
Yes, I know journaling is one of those things. One of those things you either love or hate, you're into ALL the way or just NOT at all, or that you feel like you SHOULD do but ugh.
I get you - I'm the same.
I'm not a natural journaler. I don't love the process. And I have to push myself to make it a part of my daily work - but I do it because it makes a MEASUREABLE difference in my life and business.
I regularly have moments where I write something down and think 'well THAT's not actually true, jeez Sara' and it is in that moment that the garbage story I'm telling myself about whatever is going on comes to light.
I get to NOTICE, be on to myself by seeing the story I'm believing, and then CHOOSE SOMETHING ELSE.
You can do the same.
My journaling practice (I mean, it sounds really official to call it a 'practice', but truly, it's NOT that fancy...) is less than 10 minutes a day, ONE page in my notebook, and LIFE-CHANGING.
And I'm happy to share the exact steps if you want them, just hit reply or send a message and I'll give you all the (2, ha!) pieces.
(You can also learn this process in 29 Days of Simplicity in my FB group, starting 1/31 - journaling is going to be part of the live kickoff at noon EST that day!)
2. Get coached.
This also may or may not be what you want to hear, but coaching is the fastest and most effective way our of your own way that I know.
It is 100% the tool I use to get out my own way.
To succeed you have to learn to be on to yourself about your own bullshit - and coaching is the fastest way to LEARN this skill.
I have tried to do without it too - trust me - and I'm NOT as effective on my own.
Why? Because coaching is having someone ELSE notice your bullshit and call you on it - in the most loving, kind, productive, and also uncomfortable way possible.
It's having ONE person in your world who will listen and say 'Really, is that ACTUALLY true?' when you tell them the story of all the reasons why X isn't working or can't work or won't work.
It's having ONE person call bullshit - and then in the next breath help you figure out what to do next, now that you actually know what's in your way.
And that's magic.
I get coached. It's not always fun. So I get why this may be a 'ugh' for you.
Just this week I told my coach that I loved her but didn't like her, and that the suggestion she made for something that I should try to accomplish gave me full body sweats (I'm actually sweating right now just thinking about it, ugh).
And she smiled and said 'You're welcome.' ...which was NOT what I wanted, but WAS what I needed from her.
My friend.
You DO have to get out of your own way.
But you do NOT have to do it alone.
Get your journal out and use it.
But also - get coached.
If you want to stop being stuck in the same cycle you are right now, the magical combination of journal + coaching is the answer. (Sorry, not sorry :))
And if you are ready to get OUT of your own way right now, I'm ready to help.
Hit reply and say 'I'm ready to talk about coaching.'
You can work with me 1:1, or you can join my small group program, Charting Business Success. There are 3 spots left in the group that starts the week of February 7th.
It is (beyond) time to get out of your own way.
Let's GO.
Happy Friday :)
XO,
Sara
