The Story of My Week
On Monday, I completed the 31-day career accelerator for value-driven professionals that I hosted.
It's a milestone event.
I pushed myself to show up consistently at the same time and deliver value that moves people forward in their lives and career.
One thing I have learned is this - celebrate milestone events.
To do that, I decided to return to my roots.
I bought a guitar so I could learn how to play it.
Yes, my celebration activity is to add another thing to my schedule...he smiles.
Not really.
It's a way of reawakening another side of me.
Music is a big part of who I am. I have lots of songs I wrote just living in the drawer.
Learning the guitar would be my way of making them whole.
It's my milestone celebration and also a doorway into a world that I want to reclaim.
Two birds with one stone.
It's celebrating my way.
Things I Learnt
1-People are Motivated best in their best interests: We have an initiative that we are pushing at work.
The guy driving it has been all over to make sure that we reach the finish line.
Why?
Well, it's more than just being driven to see the company succeed.
It's because his interests are well-aligned to the company's interests.
When personal and company interests align, people will go above and beyond to ensure success.
As a leader, my job is to ensure that I create goals that create such alignment.
The execution of company goals must be cascaded in a way that individuals can see their wins when the company wins.
So, they see they win every time the company wins.
It's the staying power that will drive results at work.
2-Creating my Spiritual Legacy: A teacher in one of my kid's Sunday school classes joked that she would like to come and live in our house.
Her reason - my kid knew something about what she was going to teach about most Bible stories.
Well, years of nighttime bible reading were paying off.
We don't only read the bible. This kid is fascinated with learning. So, we also read from encyclopedias set for their level every night.
Recently, I decided to go a bit more with the kids.
Every night, we would read as a family directly from the Bible. Yes, they won't understand everything but that's why we the parents are there.
Reading the Bible is my way of preparing them for a more complex understanding of the Biblical narrative.
Not everything is just stories in the Bible. They have to get introduced to the Psalms and other not-story-based sections of the Bible.
One more thing I started is having memory verses.
We'll pick a verse that we'll devote days to memorizing.
Why is this important?
Well, it's a simple way of making the Bible a part of their lives.
Most of the scripture verses I recall from memory now are verses I spent time with during my growing years.
They have been a source of comfort and encouragement for me.
And I want the same thing for my kids.
