Faith & Life Lessons - June 12, 2022

Welcome to the June 12th edition of Faith & Life Lessons.

You will see this email full of tidbits from my week. My goal is simple. I hope that from how I live my life, you can find a thing or two that helps you as you try to live a life that matters. I am always trying to do one thing - make Christ-focused decisions in love, work, and life. And this was my week.

The Story of My Week

My wife and I went to the Nigerian embassy in Dakar for a new passport.

At a point, she remarked, "this is the most people-friendly Nigerian embassy I have ever experienced."

I had become used to them that I didn't realize it.

As part of the requirements of a Nigerian in Senegal, I had to register with the embassy.

Right after I submitted my registration documents, I get a call from the embassy.

It was the consular calling.

He called to ask me to meet with him.

It was a good meeting.

He liked to meet with Nigerian professionals coming into Senegal to help them settle down. He gave me advice on things I should take note of.

I was proud to have an Embassy like this supporting me.

It gives me hope that my country will always have a remnant of people in public service who will serve people.

Because it is why they show up at work.

I believe that a better Nigeria will come out.

Things I Learnt

1-Take the Little Step: I am sure you have probably been bombarded with a lot of advice on building your wealth.

Real estate, multiple streams of income, and the list goes on.

One thing we often forget is the constant simple advice - start with small steps.

I saw the impact of small steps recently.

Five years ago, I started a monthly investment contribution. Nothing much, I just wanted to have an additional investment line in my list of investments.

A funny thing happened, the investment matured at the same time I need to make some payments based on the new life transitions the family is going through.

The matured sum was very good to help us cover the need.

When I did the trickle investment, it was not towards a need. It was just creating another investment class for me.

Those little trickles became a big payout after 5 years. Big enough to create a significant whirlpool.

Thinking about making investments?

Start small. And be patient.

Just something I re-learned recently.

2-Understand Your Advisors: The team I lead is made up of different personalities. Personalities that have different character bents.

I know the ones that push me to risk more and I know the ones that keep me in check when I am taking too much risk.

I got advice from both sides this week.

It's in circumstances like these that a pre-defined value statement comes into play.

I had defined what would be the most important value I would bring into such situations.

I simply asked - which choice from either side brings me closer to living out my pre-defined value statement?

And that told me the choice I should make.

It pays to have advisors.

Advisors are better maximized when we understand their worldview.

And optimize their worldview on how best we optimize it to create our value for the world.

Postscript

May you live a life that honors God by bringing as much value to the world as we have been given by God. Amen.
