Faith & Life Lessons - January 28, 2024

Welcome to the January 28th edition of Faith & Life Lessons.

You will see this email full of tidbits from my week. My goal is simple. I hope that from how I live my life, you can find a thing or two that helps you as you try to live a life that matters. I am always trying to do one thing - make Christ-focused decisions in love, work, and life. And this was my week.

The Story of My Week

It’s the last week in January and things are already changing.

I met with one of the persons I had identified as part of the support to drive one of my 2024 goals.

The meeting put a whole new spin on several things.

One of the goals I had earlier went to the chopping board. And another one took its place.

Why?

Because the old one now seems irrelevant to the rest of the two I have.

Yes, I have only 3 goals for 2024.

The 3rd one had always been a sticking point…but I put it there because it was an opportunity that was available for the taking.

And I wanted to take it.

However, after speaking with this person, I discovered that my first goal was bigger than I earlier imagined.

It’s too big to be one goal.

It needs to be two - two goals that deliver different results but are still aligned.

Aligned with my overall vision.

Now I have 3 goals - a new one to the old one I had earlier.

I started with 3 and I am still running with 3.

3 huge goals to make my 2024 my best year to date.

Things I Learnt

1 - No Pressure to Push Me Over the Edge: On one of the goals I have, I had a tactical assessment with the organisation helping with it.

After our call, they sent me an email on the next steps and the financial implications.

Not more than I can bear.

But not what I want to bear now.

During the call, they had tried to emphasize the need to kick start the process as soon as possible.

Because things can change soon.

No matter how things change, I am confident that things will work out well for me.

I will not let anything steal my peace.

So, I decided to respond that I would like to push the implementation forward by at least 1 month.

Why?

Because I think I will be in a better position to start the process.

Unless they are willing to make concessions now.

In 2024, I am committed to reaching my goals by stretching myself without losing my peace.

The peace I live with helps me to see things better and think more clearly.

I’m letting nothing take that away from me.

2 - Yesterday’s Small Steps into Today’s Big Leap: Interestingly, the years I have spent investing in learning in different areas are paying off in unique ways.

In the company where I work, my role was expanded to oversee additional roles.

The beauty of how these things work is that the teams are not foreign to me.

They have not been part of the roles I did at work but I had invested time in the past learning about what makes things tick for these roles. Not because I was aiming for those roles but simply because I was focusing on metrics across different teams that drive organisational success.

The benefit is that I can speak a language that the respective teams understand.

Having lived and worked in multiple cross-cultural country experiences, I know the importance of having the same language.

On 3 of the goals I have for the year, I spoke with different persons and they all pointed out that writing a book would significantly help me in meeting the goals.

Guess what? I have spent years writing consistently to develop the practice of writing.

Consistency beats talent.

Consistency in doing the little hard work required every day would eventually compound into something more after an extended time.

Now I have to start new “small steps” that will compound into something big for the future.

Yep, plant the successes of tomorrow through the disciplines of today.

Postscript

May you be diligent in planting the successes of tomorrow through the disciplines of today. Amen.
