Faith & Life Lessons - December 11, 2022

image

Welcome to the December 11th edition of Faith & Life Lessons.

You will see this email full of tidbits from my week. My goal is simple. I hope that from how I live my life, you can find a thing or two that helps you as you try to live a life that matters. I am always trying to do one thing - make Christ-focused decisions in love, work, and life. And this was my week.

The Story of My Week

This week I got reminded of why I am on the job.

The reminder came because of what I am having to face.

Work is challenging and it's like every turn brings a new bump in the road.

The fun way I see it is that I am here because I am part of the solution for it.

I bring a unique view to the solution.

This is what I remind myself.

I heard someone say during the week "all things don't need to work out right in business, only a few things need to work out right for success."

And it's the few things that I am on the lookout for every time.

I got some of the few last weeks.

And I am sure I will still get some of the few in the new week.

That is why I am here.

For a time like this.

Things I Learnt

1 - The Blessing of a Long Memory: Parenting comes with different pecks. One of the pecks is the possibility of seeing your life lived all over again through a mini-me.

One of the gifts I carry which comes with a difficult curse is a long memory.

I have memories from long years ago.

The redemption for me came through my faith in Jesus. God healed me of the hurt from painful memories.

Now the memories are my doorway into my children's world.

Now and again I see behaviour from either of them that is consistent with something I did as a kid.

My long memory refreshes the emotions I had.

Based on that, I try to engage with what I think they may be feeling.

It's a new tool kit to my parenting world.

Something that God put there for helping my kids.

As I lead them.

2 - The Paradox of Responsibility: I was listening to Michael Hyatt talk about his recent recovery from a heart attack during the year. One of the lessons he learnt from the experience was this.

He realised that no matter how hard he worked or how well-prepared he was, he is not responsible for his results.

God is.

Having said that, he also stated that this does not excuse him from his responsibility.

Taking responsibility is how he succeeded as former CEO of a $250M corporation and the founder and chairman of a multimillion-dollar, leadership-development company.

He is also aware that doing all the right things does not guarantee the right result.

But this also helps.

This is the paradox.

There is a limit to our responsibility - a boundary where God takes over.

I am trying to live well under this paradox.

Postscript

May you never overwhelm yourself trying to take responsibility for the things that God wants to take responsibility for. Amen
