Hello Happy Readers!
I'm in full writing mode and have neared 115K words of Villainous Wings. I'm aiming for between 200K-250K, so hang on tight! And yes, for those who hate it, I'm warning you now - there will be a cliffhanger at the end before you can dive into book 2!
Okay, so, I'm going to jump over to my text in the draft book and copy an excerpt for you at the place I'm at right now so you can see what I'm doing.
Warning - There might be spoilers!
EXERPT:
Zayd’s cheeks flushed red and I think mine might have, too. So, I moved on.
“How did your year three cadets do in the last challenge, the Battle Tactics test that you taught?”
“Brian and Glenna scored admirably, but John Somers and Richard Crawly won.”
I stared at the stone ceiling as I pondered the name. “Somers? Isn’t there a Captain Somers in the Abarath Outpost?”
“Yes, that is Captain Giovanni Somers. John’s father.”
My neck hurt, even with my gentle movements as I tipped it down again. “No wonder he knows about Battle Tactics then.” I quickly realised my insult. “Not that your tutoring wasn’t what made him so awesome, of course.”
He looked relaxed, slouched into the seat where he chuckled at me. “Remember that I’m the one tutoring the combat training, too, and I can take it easy on you or make it very, very hard.”
I closed my eyes to rest them from the light as I groaned. “That starts after today’s challenge. Combat is the fifth challenge isn’t it?”
“Yes, as from Monday, you're in my care, my little warrior.”
I hadn’t noticed that Ben had returned and was almost by my bed as he began shouting at Zayd. “She isn’t your anything! She is mine! Don’t force me to prove my point.”
Zayd had stood up as the threat approached. Ben held his black uniform shirt in a tight grip in his left hand, as blood flooded in forking rivers down his back, and with his other hand he pointed his finger in Zayd’s face. But he didn’t touch him.
“If we would have been in the black wing territory, you’d be dead for even thinking something on the contrary about my queen.”
Zayd hovered his hand above the hilt of his sword. “We’re not in the black wing territory, and as far as I know, she has not accepted to be your queen yet.”
“I’m well fucking aware!” Ben spat.
I hissed at the pain as I moved my neck. “Calm down, Ben,” I whispered lowly. It was obvious that he was in no mood to take feedback on his orthodox ruling. “We were only bantering. I don’t believe that was on your rules’ list.”
“I hadn’t finished it,” he snapped at me, his eyes glowing red with anger - or jealousy.
“What rules list?” Zayd asked, looking disgusted at hearing that Ben had put restrictions on me.
“No looking at her. No speaking to her. No smelling her. No listening to her. Definitely no tasting or touching her!”
Zayd frowned. “How am I suppose to teach her combat next month if I can’t touch her… or any of that other stuff?”
Ben lost it; the look in his eyes foreign to the man I knew. He shoved Zayd backwards so his shoulders slammed into the wall behind him. Zayd’s stare intensified and he moved low, striking a punch at Ben’s side, who folded, losing his breath.
“No fighting in the infirmary!” Collin bellowed from the other end of the hall, hurrying our way between the beds.
Ben drew a breath and straighten up tall, crossing his arms over his chest to show he wouldn’t strike another punch, but his entire face told me he would have liked to retaliate.
Before the healer had reached us, he muttered to Zayd, “Good of you to come and guard Angelica whilst General Denor forced my attendance in the torture room.”
Zayd leaned in closer to Ben’s face as if telling him that he hadn’t been frightened by the black winged king. “As always, it wasn’t for you.” Zayd turned to me but didn’t get any closer to avoid angering the beast. “See you in class, little worrier.” After a quick and impish leer to taunt Ben, he rushed out of the infirmary before the black winged king’s merciful streak would falter.
I hope you liked that exerpt and will stay tuned for more exciting news!
Until next time,
Therese
