Hello again!
Yes, it's true. At long last I have finished the first draft of Elixir of Power Book 2: An Elvish Rebel's Field Guide to the Art of Hit and Run!
My benevolent master has let me out of the typing cage. I felt the sun on my skin for the first time in months, a strange and almost overwhelming sensation.
It is such a relief to be finished, but it's only the first stage. Unfortunately, a lot like raw chicken, the draft is not yet fit for human consumption. There are a few steps left to go.
First, I'll be leaving the book alone for a few weeks so I can come back to it with fresh eyes. Then I'll start the (hopefully brief and painless) process of editing it.
One edit for character and structure—the big pieces.
Then, an edit for style and grammar and consistency.
Finally, I'll be able to send out copies to beta readers and adjusting things based on their feedback.
I have big hopes for this book and the trilogy as a whole. I have taken a few risks, but I've also invested a fair amount of effort into building on the things people liked about the first book. It's just like any sequel—bigger, better, a little more complex, venturing to strange new places with a familiar cast of characters.
I'll be in touch soon (hopefully) to gauge interest in beta reading. Like always, those who have beta read before will be prioritized, but there is always room for a few more.
That's all for now! I'll probably take a 72-hour nap and rest my poor tappy-typers (fingers).
Oh—and the cruel master that kept me locked up while I typed the story?
Upon my release, I passed a mirror in the hall and caught sight of a familiar face. I raised my hand and touched my cheek ... his cheek.
All along, it seems, my jailer and tormentor had been ...
Me.
Spooky twist or silly joke? I don't know, I'm too exhausted from drafting. I'll rest up and see if I can't come up with better material for the next newsletter.
