Hello again!

Part of creating the world of the Elixir of Power trilogy has been coming up with interesting chapter quotes. They are genuinely a lot of fun to come up with, and it's a nice challenge to try and match each one to the chapters that fits it best.

One of the consequences of this is that I have a rather large—and still growing—list of made-up in-universe books and their authors. I thought it might be interesting to share some of the chapter quotes—unpolished and unedited—to give you all a bit of a sneak preview of book 2!

In general, when editing I will be doing everything I can to shorten the quotes. They work best when they are brief and punchy, and besides, it doesn't look right when they take up half the page.

Anyway, here they are:

Too often, what keeps people from speaking the truth is an inability to see it.

Sage Nyendi, Answers for Outcasts

The great tragedy of philosophy is that those who are wise enough to contribute to it should also be wise enough to keep far, far away from it. It is a fool’s discipline, through and through,

Sidarí, written in notes she later abandoned.

The worst fear of the poor is death. The worst fear of the rich is becoming poor.

My worst fear is that the cruelty inherent to this fact will forever remain unacknowledged.

Temlin, Book of the Exiles

They say a table piled high with bread rains down crumbs aplenty on those below. Sometimes you need to give the table a little shake. If you do, take care—those above us are fond of their feasts, and they are not afraid to kick.

One morning in Norimand, the archdeacon burst into the king’s chambers and slammed the door behind him.

“Your Majesty, the peasants are revolting!” he cried.

The king sighed, and said, “I know they are. Just do what I do—pinch your nose and try to carry on.”

Jeremiah Scutt, Odd Tales From Abroad

Most of the chapter quotes at the moment are two or three times the length of these ones—yikes!

There is still a lot of editing and polishing to be done. Take note of these ones I have included here—some of them will probably be unrecognizable by the time I'm through with them!

Until Book 2 of Elixir of power is out, you can check out the books below, there are plenty of great books among them that are well worth giving a try!
