😎 3 Tips On How To Build New Habits Within a Couple of Days
Habits are something we all have. They can be good or bad, depending on the habits you may want to get rid of and the ones that you would like to replace them with. Habits are a product of our environment, upbringing, and mental state at any given time. Habits can also be changed through practice and repetition. If you're looking for some ways to build new habits in your life (or break old ones), read on!
1. What is a habit? 🧐
Habits are automatic behaviors you exhibit regularly. They are things that, once performed, don't really take any extra thought on your part – you just do them. They're the same actions repeated over and over again until they become second nature to us; something we do without much effort at all (i.e., brushing our teeth in the morning, or making a cup of coffee in the afternoon to help stay awake).
2. How to build new habits? 🧐
There are several ways to build new habits:
- Habits can be developed by setting aside time for them.
- Doing the same thing every day until it becomes a routine in your mind; by surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals and/or have a mentor who has already adopted the habit.
- Habits can be created by identifying your motivation behind it, and then firmly deciding that you want to make this new behavior stick (i.e., if you want to develop a habit of eating healthier, your motivation may be to lose weight and feel better about yourself).
3. Why break old habits? 🧐
Sometimes, bad habits can:
- Work against us.
- Be harmful to us and our surroundings.
- Be destructive because they don't often require much thought, allowing us to slide into lazy thinking and/or behavior.
- One bad habit can lead to another.
- They trigger us to do a certain thing without any thought at all.
- They are difficult to break because they've become so automatic (i.e., you're doing it every day, and your brain
🙌🏼 (Bonus) Tips for breaking old habits and building new ones in their place.
- The first step to breaking a bad habit is identifying the negative behavior you want to end.
- Once that's settled, determine how you're going to stop this negative behavior – what will you do instead?
- Habits are often replaced by something else – think of it as being a "substitute" for the bad habit.
- Habits can be broken by time management; if something is getting in the way of your old routines, such as a lack of time or motivation, then make an adjustment and give yourself a "time out" from the bad habit.
- You want to create consequences for bad habits and rewards for good habits.
