Quick Thoughts - A short email to think on.

Hello everyone,

I hoped you enjoyed finding last week's email in your inbox - even though I sent it unedited because I apparently don't know how to hit schedule instead of send.

Quick Thoughts

I have a longer email that I'm working on but I ended up having to write more elsewhere - 12k words of notes (more on that next) and 4k words across different things for University.

You'll get the better, in-depth email next week - but here's some short entries for now.

  • Exploring Twitter again.
  • You're going to die.
  • The 10x outlook.

Cracking Twitter #2

Last year in August, I decided I wanted to grow a brand on Twitter and did it for a few weeks, reaching ~100 followers from scratch before giving up.

I didn't like the content I was reading, I couldn't figure out how to grow better (I was being outgrown by a kid that was posting 200+ copied tweets a day), and I didn't like that the only DMs I was getting were from people trying to sell me Affiliate Products and Pyramid Schemes.

I ended up deleting Twitter from my phone - even though it had been the only social media I actually enjoyed.

Then the other day, I read an article that changed my perspective.

Two years ago, when I was first using Twitter consistently as a passive reader, I came across a guy my age trying to grow his own account and was really happy that he hit 500 followers. He openly admitted to having no skills, no expertise, and no other forms of leverage. Last year, when I started on my brand, he had managed to grow to 15k and was slowly adding more.

The article I read was on how he was now making $10k a month through his audience... which had now grown to 180k+.

The money is beside the point. The main fact is most of us would love an audience of that size. An audience that would allow us to gain instant feedback on ideas, gain instant traction on projects, and connect with people we admire.

That was the catalyst for me to want to give it another go. This time though with a bit more strategy and experimentation.

To begin, I sat down and consumed every piece of information I could on succeeding at Twitter (Guides, YT interviews, podcast interviews, Twitter Threads, Notion notes, etc.) It took a few days but I started to see patterns in the advice.

My summary of all of these notes and pieces of advices (in dot point form) ended up being 12,600+ words long.

I'll transfer these notes into a cheat sheet and use it to try to crack twitter, and attach stakes to it. (I'll share the Cheat Sheet next email)

More on this once I get the cheat sheet done and figure out the parameters of the experiment.

The 10x Outlook

My goal for Twitter will most likely be to hit the 1k mark by the end of the year- after which, compounding and the sunk cost fallacy should allow me to continue growing.

To prepare myself for the experiment of trying to hit 1k, I created an idea list for how - if I had no option of failure - I would hit 10k followers by the end of the year. It gave me a lot of ideas (25+) that I can now use to increase my chances of hitting the 1k mark.

You can do this with any objective or goal, if you HAD to be 10x more successful, how would you do it?

You'll get some great insights.

Parting advice: Memento Mori.

One of the Stoic concepts that has really impacted me is Memento Mori: Remember you will die.

I have a coin (thanks Fia!) and necklace with the words Memento Mori engraved into them. It's something that I have thought about a lot.

Mostly, we live in cultures that tries to ignore death - to focus on living, and drown out those uncomfortable thoughts. It's why most people struggle with intense regrets, because they adopt an attitude of limitless time.

If you can take the idea of Memento Mori, and deal with it in a way that inspires you rather than creates despair, you'll make much better decisions.

That's it for this week.

As always, thanks for reading - and let me know what you liked / disliked.
