Pockets of Memory
Sophia Mae Belisario
i no longer know how to love being alone with myself
but i remember this
the sound of chirping birds in the morning
the crackling of leaves as i step on them on the way to nowhere
the rustling of leaves on trees i don’t look at
the waves hitting the shoreline and pulling back over and over and over lulling me to a sense of
peace
i remember this
the smell of freshly brewed coffee in the morning
the taste of warm bread and butter i get on the way to nowhere
the wind against my skin from the shore i don't look at
and the idle chatter all around me lulling me to peace
i remember these
i have yet to remember what it was about being alone that i loved so much but i think of these
things as i wallow in the comfort of the embrace of those who love me
in the future, wherever you may be, i hope you get to experience all these all over again
and if not
if by some way you never love yourself
i hope that you at least remember what it is like
and hold these pockets of memory close to your heart and remember that for your sake at least,
i will never stop trying
