Reality Is Not a Brief

May 13, 2026 12:13 pm

Dear friends,

I have just published a new article on Medium titled Reality Is Not a Brief: Carlo Rovelli, Design Education and the Collapse of the Fixed World.

The article begins with Carlo Rovelli’s extraordinary ideas about physics, space, time, relation and uncertainty, but it quickly moves into the territory of design and education. If reality is not made of fixed objects sitting inside a stable container, then perhaps design education can no longer pretend that briefs, classrooms, timetables, outputs and assessments are fixed either.

This piece asks what happens when we bring Rovelli’s thinking into the design studio. It explores design as relation, the classroom as a living field, learning as formation, critique as method, and the urgent need to move beyond polished outputs towards deeper judgement, responsibility and transformation.

At a time when AI can generate the appearance of design almost instantly, we need to defend the slow formation of the eye, the hand, the mind and the person. The visible output is not the invisible learning. The portfolio is not the student. The brief is not the world.
