New episode: Dan Vlahos on Design as a Dynamic Discipline

May 18, 2026 12:20 pm

Dear friends,

In this new episode of Design Education Talks, I speak with Dan Vlahos, a Boston-based design leader, educator, researcher, and Senior Lecturer at Bentley University. Dan’s work moves across graphic design, dynamic media, motion graphics, sustainability, creative learning, and design education. His career has taken him from Arnold Worldwide’s Volkswagen Design Group to the world of architecture at Shepley Bulfinch, and now into teaching, research, and design leadership through his work at Bentley University and AIGA Boston.

Our conversation explores design not as a fixed or static profession, but as a dynamic discipline. We discuss complexity, ambiguity, praxis, generative AI, interdisciplinary learning, and the responsibility of preparing students for a world where design problems are rarely simple and never purely aesthetic. Dan reminds us that design education must do more than teach tools or produce polished outcomes. It must help students think, question, make, collaborate, and imagine futures that do not yet exist.
