How this FL Director handles ECE Burnout

Jul 31, 2025 5:11 pm

Let’s be honest.

The overstimulation in today’s classrooms isn’t just affecting the kids.

It’s burning you out.

The chaos.

The noise.

The transitions that feel like battlefields.

The lights that never dim.

The crying that echoes off the walls.

The thousand little fires no one else sees you putting out.

💥 BOOM: Overstimulation is pushing our youngest learners to the edge...

and it’s pushing you over it.

“I feel like all I did today was put out fires. I didn’t get to connect with any of them.”

That’s what one brilliant infant teacher told her director through tears.

That director's name is Rebecca Patrick. She’s been in early childhood education for 35 years, and in a recent interview, she exposed the painful truth we all feel but rarely say out loud:

“Those behavioral challenges are the primary fuel for staff burnout...Their energy was completely redirected from facilitating learning to de-escalating conflict and comforting overwhelmed children.”

We know the signs:

  • Children biting out of sensory overload
  • Teachers dreading pickup time because it feels like “controlled chaos”
  • The guilt, shame, and silence around using digital tools, even when they help

It’s time we say what we already know:

👉🏾 The link between overstimulated classrooms and educator burnout is real.

And pretending otherwise is killing retention, morale, and the joy that brought you here in the first place.

So what do we do?

We build better tools.
