The Monetize: Sell Thinking At Scale by Tim Conley

Do you have a bias for action?

If there was one thing I could convince you of to help you succeed in business and life it's "do it now."

Got an idea for a new service for your clients? Do it now.

Don't wait, don't ponder. Write down what the service will do, how it will benefit your clients and what you're going to charge for it.

Then sell it.

Call up a few of your clients and pitch it to them. If you get some yeses, roll it out to the rest. Any time you get a no, ask them why. Tell them their feedback will help you improve the offer.

A lesson I learned early in my career is that entrepreneurs aren't naturally risk-takers. What they are is people who get comfortable with ambiguity.

In life there are a small number of wrong choices, but there are infinite right choices, some more optimal than others. It's rare that you'll ever make a wrong decision, but you'll make lots of suboptimal ones where you don't get the exact outcome you desire.

I've seen multi-million dollar entrepreneurs hesitate to spend a few hundred dollars on testing a new ad platform because it might not work. My responses were, "It definitely won't work if you don't try it. But, you'll learn how to use the platform and get data quickly with a sliver of your ad budget."

Here's the how to know if you should do something and do it now:

When you consider an idea that could give you what you want in business and life, and you get scared... hesitation rears up, and you second-guess. That's the signal. That's Jim Gordon calling Batman.

The task you fear most is often the key to unlocking your next stage of growth.

Turn that fear into excitement (they're literally the same energy, the same electrical impulses in the body) by taking action.

Action isn't go full bore and risk it all. Action is take the first real steps towards making the idea real. Reading a book, watching a video or doomscrolling X isn't making the idea real.

Here's a practical approach: choose one project, platform, marketing channel and dedicate yourself to it for a full year. You do not have to get everything right from the start. Give yourself patience for repetition and learning through trial and error. Business and life goals take time to master and I've seen too many quit on an idea too soon.

Whenever doubt creeps in, ask yourself what the worst outcome would really be. Are you risking everything or just challenging your comfort zone? In almost every case, the obstacle is more about ego and fear of embarrassment than genuine danger. Moving past these fears quickly by taking physical action is the best way to build resilience and start growing.

To your progress,

Tim Conley
