Japan has rules. Nobody gave you the manual.

You've been here long enough to know that something is always slightly off.

Not wrong, exactly. Just... off.

The meeting where everyone agreed and then nothing changed. The apology that didn't feel like one. The compliment that landed strangely. The "yes" that turned out to mean "I heard you."

Japan is not complicated because it's foreign. It's complicated because it runs on a set of assumptions that nobody states out loud, because everyone already knows them.

Let's get into the crash course!

#1: Culture isn't just festivals and food. It's the operating logic underneath.

Most guides to Japanese culture give you a superficial overview: bow when you greet people, don't tip, take your shoes off.

Fine. Useful.

But the reason so many foreigners still feel like guests after years of living here is that the deeper layer, the why behind all of it, never gets explained. Our guide goes beyond that tired etiquette checklist.

#2: Customs are not arbitrary. They're a system. And systems can be learned.

What looks like excessive formality from the outside is actually a highly efficient social technology.

Once you understand what Japanese customs are for (what problems they solve, what they're communicating), they stop feeling like obstacles and start feeling like useful tools. The trick is the logic behind them, not just the rules themselves.

#3: And then there are the superstitions. Which are... their own thing entirely.

Some of them are ancient.

Some of them are frankly baffling.

Some of them will explain a piece of behavior you've been confused about for months. Did you know the number four is so avoided that some hospitals and hotels skip it entirely on floor plans? Or that sleeping facing north is considered bad luck because that's how bodies are laid out at funerals?

Japan contains multitudes. This is a good introduction to a few of the stranger ones.

This is exactly what The Japan School's Discovery Japan program is built around. Not just the language, but the cultural logic and social mindset underneath it. Because Japanese alone doesn't explain Japan.
