Weekly Wednesday Update: How to say sorry the NVC way

Sep 01, 2021 4:01 pm

Hi there,

Welcome back to weekly Wednesday update. First, we dive into our most recent podcast episode on how to apologize, judgment-free, using an NVC framework. Then, we go on to talk about this new idea of giving you a weekly challenge to grow your NVC awareness/skills. Finally, we provide information about the upcoming week's Empathy Gym schedule.

I'm Sorry!

Did you ever consider that saying "I'm sorry" may actually be a judgmental statement about yourself? And, if that is the case, what is one to do? I mean, we all grew up being told "Say you are sorry!" when we did something "wrong." And, as a child, did you ever just say "I'm sorry" without actually meaning it? All of this points to some of the shortcomings of that phrase. Yet, when we have done something we regret, there just might be a way to express that and have more authenticity and accountability than the "I'm sorry" phrase we are used to saying.

Check out this Episode when Dr. B and Heather discuss how to apologize in NVC without using evaluations or judgments and why an NVC apology can provide more accountability and understanding that the typical "I'm sorry" statement.

Your NVC Challenge of the Week

I just started reading Atomic Habits in an attempt to see how I can support my followers to make NVC a consistent process in their day-to-day lives. I'm just scraping the surface of this book, but the first take away is to start small, meaning start with a small behavior change, but make it consistent.

So, since we are focusing on the phrase "I'm sorry" this week. How about see if you can catch yourself at some point this week using that statement. Just catch yourself. Notice it. I'm tempted to give you many other things to do - but to keep it small and simple, let's just start with awareness. Can you catch yourself?

If you do, I would honestly love to hear from you. And as a bonus for catching yourself, I promise I will write back with "next steps." Here at the office, we wonder if anyone is reading these emails and it would be great to hear from some of you to know that what we are writing is being received. Okay, that's all for this. I'm sure there will be more to come about forming your language/thinking/intention habits towards connection going forward.
