Hey Ho, Tenebrous Cult!

We got preorders, we got a 2027 announcement, we got a party tonight in Brooklyn! Let's get started, shall we?

ALICIA IS IN THE BASEMENT preorders are open

Early response to Santiago Eximeno's skin-crawling, deeply disturbing story of a missing child and her father's desperate, no-tactic-too-drastic search for her, has been phenomenal.

But be warned, y'all: if you look up the word "harrowing" in the dictionary, you're gonna see this cover beside it.

About ALICIA IS IN THE BASEMENT:

One summer afternoon, Santi and Maria's daughter disappears without a trace from a public park. A fruitless investigation passes, the agony only serving to tear Santi’s life and family further apart.

Months go by, and Santi finally stumbles upon a clue: it is hardly a name, barely a whisper, but it is enough to reveal a haunting legacy and unleash an entirely new kind of horror upon the despairing young father:

“He Who Does Not Speak With Children.”

First English language release. Translated by Alicia L. Alonso.

Cover art and interior illustrations by Jenna Cha.

ALICIA IS IN THE BASEMENT features disturbing scenes of child death, violence and abduction. Please be advised.

"Tenebrous went for broke here and this is by far their best. A painstaking, demented journey."

  • The Next Best Book Club

ALICIA IS IN THE BASEMENT is out June 16th, and we'll have a helluva lot more to say about it in the coming months.

But for now:

PREORDER IT.

...that is, if you can handle the white knuckles.

Coming in 2027: A TOWN PAINTED RED by Jacy Morris

image

WE LIKE IT CHERRY chilled us all to the bone in 2025, and author Jacy Morris is back beneath the Tenebrous umbrella in 2027, where he belongs.

We're not journeying to the Arctic circle this time around; in fact, events in A TOWN PAINTED RED take place in my neck of the woods! Now, Portland Oregon's taken a bit of a beating in recent years, so here's hoping he treats it kindly...

...spoiler alert: I've read the book. He does not. Shit gets painted red real fast.

A TOWN PAINTED RED is out April 20, 2027. Yes, 4/20, which Jacy gleefully pointed out in his return email. And no, I did not pick that intentionally, yet it feels apropos. Much more to come on this one (including an absolutely killer cover by Matias San Juan).

This cat has great taste in books

Boy it's too bad the Tenebrous Quality Control Dept. was on break when I wrote that groaner of a headline. I regret nothing!

But for reals: author Matthew Pritt's cat knows a good book, and the latest volume of SPLIT SCREAM continues the fine tradition of top-notch, movie-sized New Weird Horror double features.

First, from two-time Ladies of Horror Award Winner and BRAVE NEW WEIRD recipient Sonora Taylor, comes a trip to a terrifying mansion of mirrors in "Passing Glance":

Washington, D.C.’s sprawling and storied Moore Mansion is built upon intrigue and secrecy, playing host to both political elites and the merely curious alike. Its labyrinthine rooms and passageways, festooned in eclectic art and mysterious mirrors, captivate all who explore them.

Dylan arrives at the mansion for her friend’s 30th birthday party at a crossroads of her own: adrift, eager to reunite with old friends, and seeking to rekindle a long-held lust for one of the group. But tonight she will discover the true terrifying secrets of Moore Mansion: a house built to be a city, and one which unfolds like a trap.

Then, Matthew Pritt takes you to a grim post-apocalyptic world where environmental collapse has taken on a new horrific form, in "Lash Egg":

The people of the Doe’s country walk in the Balance, attuned to the land and guided by their benevolent nature spirit. For Ben, a refugee who narrowly escaped the madness-infested Bear’s country to the south, the Doe remains a mystery. Ben has never heard the Doe speak, and marvels at his neighbors’ firsthand experiences with his new home’s Protector. Fortunately his ten-year-old daughter, Lydia, doesn’t share his struggles, and adapts to life in the Doe with ease.

But when a mysterious wasting plague attacks the local wildlife, Ben suspects he is the cause of it. As the plague spreads and threatens to collapse the Doe’s entire ecosystem, Ben must discover how he has offended the Doe, or risk losing the only safe place he and his daughter have ever known.
