🎨 Van Gogh, Failures, and Your Next Great Hire! ✨

Hey there ,

Reading time: 1 min 33 secs

Last night I just got back from a whirlwind weekend visiting my sister in the beautiful city of York.

We packed so much into three days, but my absolute highlight was the Van Gogh Immersive Experience. Being surrounded by those vibrant colours and swirling brushstrokes was truly breathtaking.

And as I stood there, lost in his world, a particular quote by Van Gogh resonated deeply with me, especially when I think about hiring:

"Success is sometimes the outcome of a whole string of failures."

It's a powerful thought, isn't it?

We often look at the final masterpiece, the successful hire, the thriving team, and forget the journey it took to get there.

Just like Van Gogh experienced countless struggles, rejections, and artistic detours before his genius was fully recognised, the path to building a brilliant team is rarely a straight line.

Think about your own hiring journey:

  • The "almost" hire: That perfect candidate who suddenly pulls out, leaving you back at square one.
  • The bad fit: The person who looked great on paper but just didn't click with the team culture.
  • The lengthy search: The role that takes months longer to fill than you anticipated.
  • The learning curve: Each time you refine your interview questions, tweak your job description, or adjust your sourcing strategy because something didn't quite work last time.

These aren't "failures" in the traditional sense.

They're essential stepping stones.

Each unsuccessful interview, each difficult hiring decision, each moment of frustration is a data point. It's an opportunity to refine your understanding of what you truly need, to improve your process, and to get one step closer to that truly impactful hire.

Van Gogh's quote reminds us that perseverance is key.

Don't let setbacks in your hiring process discourage you.

Instead, view them as valuable lessons.

Each "failure" provides crucial information, guides you, and ultimately leads you to the success you're striving for.

So, let's embrace the journey, learn from every attempt, and trust that each step, even the challenging ones, is part of building your masterpiece of a team.

Happy Hiring!

Helen
