🎓 University Tours & the Power of Preparation: A Hiring Lesson!

Hey there ,
Reading time/investment: Just under 2 mins
A few weekends back, I had a brilliant experience visiting universities with my niece.
Due to my son's complex medical needs, I won't have the opportunity with my own son, so when my brother asked for a favour, I jumped at the chance.
We met some incredible people, but what really stood out was the stark difference in preparation.
At Bath University, for instance, the people manning the desks at the expo were outstanding.
They were well-prepped, knowledgeable, and genuinely engaged. They had answers, resources, and a palpable enthusiasm for their programs.
It made a real impression.
Conversely, at another local university (one I actually expected more from!), the experience was... less inspiring. Information was harder to come by, and the general vibe felt less organised.
This sharp contrast immediately made me think about hiring.
Because isn't the university expo experience much like a candidate's first encounter with your company?
Think about it:
Your Job Adverts/Careers Page is Your "Expo Desk":
Are they well-prepared, clear, and genuinely engaging?
Do they immediately provide the information a candidate is looking for, or do they leave them searching?
Your Recruiters/Hiring Managers are Your "University Reps":
Are they knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and ready to answer questions?
Do they convey a genuine interest in the candidate, or do they seem disengaged?
The "Vibe" Matters Immensely:
Just like a university's atmosphere, your company's hiring process sends a powerful signal about your culture.
Does it feel organised, welcoming, and professional, or chaotic and indifferent?
The talent you're trying to attract – whether it's a future student or a potential employee – is making crucial decisions based on these early interactions.
A well-prepped, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable approach speaks volumes about your organisation.
It tells candidates that you value them, you're serious about your opportunities, and you're a place where they can thrive.
Let's make sure our hiring process always reflects the "Bath University" standard: prepared, polished, and profoundly impressive.
Happy Hiring!
Helen
