🦖 Jurassic World & The Real Drivers of Talent (It's Not Always Cash!) 💰

Hey there ,

Reading time: about 1 min 45 seconds

A few weeks back, I finally watched the new Jurassic World movie with my son.

Beyond the expected dinosaurs and epic escapes, one major plot line really stuck with me.

It reminded me of a crucial truth about people's motivations when looking for a new career opportunity.

Let me introduce you to two of the characters.

You had the mercenary, clearly in it for the cash. Lots of zeroes on that cheque, no doubt. Her motivation was purely transactional.

But then you had the paleontologist – a character driven by a deep, unwavering passion for the mission. For understanding the past, for scientific discovery, for the intellectual challenge.

The money was secondary, if it even registered.

This stark contrast perfectly illustrates why people look for new roles, and it's a vital lesson for us in hiring:

It's not always about salary.

While salary is undoubtedly important (we all have bills to pay!), for many, especially top talent, it's the mission, the purpose, and the impact that truly drives their career decisions.

When someone is looking for a 'better opportunity,' it often means they're seeking:

  • A compelling mission: A company whose purpose resonates with their values and inspires them to contribute to something bigger.
  • Meaningful work: Projects that challenge them, allow them to learn, and make a tangible difference.
  • Growth and development: Opportunities to expand their skills, take on new responsibilities, and advance their career in a way that aligns with their personal aspirations.
  • A supportive culture: An environment where they feel valued, respected, and connected to their colleagues.
  • Autonomy and impact: The freedom to shape their work and see the direct results of their efforts.

If you're only leading with salary in your job adverts or initial conversations, you might be missing out on a huge pool of talent – the 'paleontologists' who are driven by something far more profound than just the monthly pay packet.

So, the next time you're looking to attract your next superstar, remember the lessons from Jurassic World.

Highlight your company's mission.

The exciting challenges.

The growth opportunities.

And the unique culture you've built.

You might just find that the most valuable talent is looking for more than just money – they're looking for a purpose worth fighting for.

Happy Hiring!

Helen
