Give Yourself a Break: The Power of Self-Compassion

May 26, 2021 8:01 am

Dear

When we experience a setback at work, we tend to either become defensive and blame others or berate ourselves. Neither response is helpful.

Shirking responsibility by getting defensive may alleviate the sting of failure, but it comes at the expense of learning. Self-flagellation, on the other hand, may feel warranted at the moment, but it can lead to mental illness and unproductivity.

Instead, give yourself a break, practice self-compassion by:

Step 1: Practice Forgiveness🙏

Stop punishing yourself for your mistakes.

Accept that you are not perfect and be gentle with yourself when you are confronted with your shortcomings. You are valued by your friends and colleagues because of who you are, not because you are faultless.

Step 2: Employing a Growth Mindsetđź’

Whether we have a fixed or growth mindset influences our happiness.

Do you view challenges as impossible obstacles or as opportunities to grow? Employing a growth mindset is more helpful.

Step 3: Be a lifelong learnerđź“š

“Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” â€“ Albert Einstein

The benefits of Life long learning

  • Renewed self-motivation
  • Recognition of personal interests and goals
  • Improvement in personal and professional skills
  • Improved self-confidence
