Dear friends,
I'm turning 47 on June 19th. As is traditional, I'm attempting to celebrate my birthday as often and extensively as possible, and this year that includes a picnic, a dinner party, a parade, and a lot of music. Here's the schedule. Please join us for some or all of these events!
Your presence is our present; there's no need to give me anything. If you feel moved to make a donation in my honor to Lambda Legal or the Ali Forney Center, that would be wonderful.
(By the way, if this is the first email you've gotten from Subtle House in a while, that's because our mailing list system thinks you're not an "engaged subscriber", which means you stopped opening emails or clicking links in them. Please click a link anywhere in here to get that coveted "engaged subscriber" status and start getting our at-home-to-visitors announcements again.)
June 14, 12–4 p.m.: Picnic in Lincoln Terrace Park, Brooklyn. We'll grab tables with seats at the playground so no one has to sit on the ground. Bring hats and sunscreen and parasols, because Lincoln Terrace has shaded areas and seating areas but no shaded seating areas.
- RSVP by June 11 so we know how much food and GF DF cake to bring, or just show up if you want to bring your own food and don't care about getting cake. (We will probably have extra cake.)
- All ages. The whole point of a daytime party is for little kids to be able to come, so please bring your babies!
- Free.
- Rain plan: hang out at my house instead (it's just a block away).
June 18, 4:30–7:30? p.m.: David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band at Birdland, Manhattan. David and a couple of his pals played at my and Josh's wedding in 2006, and their rendition of "Home" is the first song I played when we moved to this apartment. Their New Orleans–style jazz is marvelously invigorating. Doors at 4:30; show starts at 5:30; if you don't want to dine indoors, please stick around after the show for an outdoor dinner somewhere in the neighborhood.
- RSVP by May 30 so we can get tickets together and be guaranteed a shared table. Maximum 10.
- Adults only.
- $65 ($45 ticket + $20 food and drink minimum). I can cover up to half the cost for anyone who wants to come and finds that price out of reach.
June 20, 6:30–10 p.m.: At home to visitors. We'll send a separate email about it as usual.
- RSVP by June 19 for dinner or just show up to hang out.
- All ages, as always.
- Free, as always.
June 21, 11 a.m.–?? p.m.: The Mermaid Parade in Coney Island, Brooklyn. The parade itself starts at 1, but we'll get down there earlier to stake out a decent viewing spot. Bring folding chairs if you have them, and all the sun protection you've got.
- RSVP by June 19 so we can coordinate meeting up.
- All ages. The more parents are there, the more we can take turns running the kids around on the beach so they don't get bored or overwhelmed by the crowds.
- Free.
- Rain plan: enjoy the parade in the rain.
June 21, 7–9 p.m.: Musicians for Justice: Juneteenth Jazz Jubilee at Adler Hall, Manhattan. "This benefit concert for Music on The Inside (MOTI) brings together formerly incarcerated musicians with their top jazz artist mentors"—hello, an event tailor-made for me. It feels a little aspirational to attempt this after everything else, so I'm going for the cheap balcony seats; if some of us end up not being able to make it, we can still feel good about supporting a good cause.
- RSVP by May 30 so we can get seats together. Maximum 10.
- Adults only.
- $30.
See you soon!
Cheers,
Ash on behalf of Chris, Josh, Kit, and Alex-the-cat
