SYAO Creativity, the week of October 2, 2023
Oct 02, 2023 3:31 pm
Hello, everyone!
Happy Monday! Here's the latest edition of SYAO Creativity. Let's see what's going on in our creative world this week!
STITCH (What I've been working on)
I'm excited about one thing that happened officially today. I'm now the President of the Board of Directors of TNNA (the National Needlework Association). This professional organization brings together yarn companies, shop owners, and designers. We're the group who coordinates the Local Yarn Store Day event. It should be a good year! I'm excited about working with yarn manufacturers and shop owners all over the country to help bring the industry forward again after a very rough couple of years.

When I was at the beach a couple of weeks ago, I finished my experimental helix hat. I thought no one would care about it because it's mainly brown, which isn't a popular color at the moment. But I like the way I look in brown, and this was a hat just for me.
To my surprise, everyone has loved the colors! (If you look better in pink than orange, I would suggest using a charcoal gray with cooler versions of these colors.) I used 13 colors on bobbins, and knitting it was admittedly a pain. But also fun!
I loved watching it grow. It's always fun to play the "what if" game.
If you've never done helix knitting before, it's best to begin with four colors--trust me. I chose 13 colors because that was the number of groupings I had for my size.
When I finished the hat, I tried it on and noticed that it coordinated with this shirt. Selfie time!
Do you know that when you make a hat, you're making a spiral, from the beginning to the end? You can see that spiral when you're striping the hat using helix knitting:
Other than changing yarn colors, this is just like making a beginner's hat.
YOUR (What you've been working on)
Beth finished this magnificent Outlander scarf. It's 99 inches long! And lots of intarsia. And the front and the back are knit separately then joined together. And in case you're wondering, there's no pattern. Beth painted the book-cover logos, then imported those paintings into a stitch program, and then made the scarf.
ART (Inspired by art or nature)
Although today has featured much color, sometimes black and white is the best! My friend Jim Colbert drew this VW and permitted me to use it here. Love all his details. (He also designed the sheep logo for Stitch Your Art Out, and the dandelion logo for Really Clear! I love his work.)
OUT (What's out on the shelves in the shop)
I love our King Tut 40-weight quilting thread. It has slight variegation, so it adds interest, but the colors are close enough that they don't create spottiness in your quilting design. And it's smooth as butter to use!
As always, make an appointment to shop or browse, or just to show off your stuff! I can't wait to see you!
