Hi ,

Everyone wants to feel heard, we know that.

A good mentor should know it.

At the same time, we are all responsible for good internal communication.

So, how do you make people feel heard?

By listening deeply and then actively acknowledging what they say.

Here you have some advice from Matt Mochary to be a better mentor and colleague:

  • ask the person to express what their feelings and thoughts are
  • be present with the person you’re listening to
  • acknowledge what they said by summarizing it
  • go deeper by asking, "Is there more?"
  • if someone doesn't describe what they are feeling, you can still make them feel heard by saying "I imagine that you are thinking something like…." And then, "Is that right?"

Think about the people you like.

Do you like people who talk about themselves and show no interest or curiosity about you?

Making people feel heard is something crucial to building trust and connections: two essential elements both for mentors and colleagues relationships.

PS: Always keep pushing

Now... what am I supposed to do?
