Hello World!

These are the eponymous first two words every new programmers would type as their first coding assignment.

As 2021 rolls in, I am embarking on a new experiment to kick off the new year by venturing into writing. Writing my thoughts longer than those two words.

Say hello to SpicyVC. This will be the space for me to pen my thoughts, observation and ideas to share with the world.

Why do I write?

Firstly to share the knowledge that I learned and accumulated after two decades of working in Malaysia, South East Asia and the US. Hopefully these words might be useful to some folks and even help them in their careers and lives.

Secondly to activate my writing muscle. Lay dormant, the muscles might

atrophy.

Thirdly, as an experiment to see how good (and bad) and far can I grow into becoming a writer.

What will I write?

I will be focusing my writing on a few areas - (corporate & personal) finance, technology, data and entrepreneurship. These are the topics that interest me and/or industries where I spent considerable time during my working lives. Plus the odd topics or two, that I might find interesting or topical at a particular time.

I recently left the corporate world to embark on entrepreneurial experiments. I am currently working on a couple of projects 1) data management & analytics and 2) investments. And perhaps many more down the road.

I might also write about my journey as I go through building these ventures. The good, the bad and the ugly. And the occasional shameless plug to promote the projects 😉

My aim is to publish a post on a weekly basis, more or less.

What's behind the name SpicyVC?

I live in Malaysia and spent considerable amount traversing the South East Asian region for work, sourcing for investments in technology startups. One thing all the countries in this region has in common is our love for spicy foods.

Since the topic of this blog/newsletter revolves around technology and investments, the term Venture Capital seems apt to capture the intersection of these two universes.

Hence SpicyVC was born.
