The Cover Design Process

Have you ever wondered what goes into the design of a cover for a book? The truth is, it varies from book to book. Sometimes I have a very clear design in my head. And sometimes I don't. For The Winter Rogue I had some vague notions of possible cover ideas, but I wasn't really set on anything.

What I did know was:

• I wanted to use The Swoonies (cover artist) for my cover design
• I wanted snow in some capacity
• Christmas needed to feature in the design
• A library with a fire was one option
• A snowy scene in front of a manor house was another option

So I had already booked with Holly Perret of The Swoonies to design my cover and I have always loved and wanted one of her beautiful covers. She paints them digitally and they look like the old school painted covers. She has done so many amazing covers I basically gave her the options above, with maybe a few more details, the book summary, and told her to design what moves her.

I was going to love whatever she designed, so I was pretty comfortable letting her go for it. And it paid off! She designed a gorgeous cover that I requested very few changes to be made. I asked for the holly over the fireplace with the red ribbons and to remove some roses. That was it. Seriously. She did such a fabulous design from the start.
