This week started with a bad case of writer’s block. Every time I sat at the computer, the characters stood in front of the door to my writing room and shook their heads. “Nope. We’re not talking to you.”
I referenced the pictures on my Pinterest board. (This is the inspiration for the father figure) I begged, cajoled, threatened to make them say stupid things. They crossed their arms and dug their feet in the ground.
Not too many things upset me. The inability to write upsets me. In Merri-melodramatic fashion, I declared it the end of my creativity. “Fine,” I said. “I just won’t write.” So I didn’t. To stick it to those belligerent characters, I went to bed at what others call a normal time—two days in a row.
Then guess what happened. I woke on the third day to find that the characters had a lot to say to me. They were witty, caring, and provocative. The dad was wise and grouchy. My female lead was forthright with her feelings, and the male lead was willing to admit to his friends he needed help winning the girl.
The point to this story. Sometimes we need to give ourselves a break. I tell my students the mind needs to breathe, but I hadn't followed my own advice. If you find yourself up against a wall, have a sit-down and a glass of tea (or a cup of coffee or cocoa). When your mind is ready, it will give you the resources to accomplish your goal. This advice works well for spring cleaning which is also on my to-do list.

I love quotes. I love sassy quotes, funny quotes, and quotes that remind me to appreciate life. For years, I have shared quotes on my Facebook and Instagram pages. Lately, I have been reading craft, or how to be a better writer, books. So while the quotes are “interesting,” they aren’t anything I would want to share.
This is where you come in. Would you share your favorite quote with me? I’ll make it into a graphic and give you credit when I share it.
I am willing to exchange a book for your inspiration. One person will receive a $10 gift card to the book store of their choosing. So please, help me make the world a happier place by sharing your favorite words.
