Trello Case Study

This article is not to ponder over Trello's product team's thought process, but rather to give Adam's two cents on the "new stuff" recently introduced to the app. The “new stuff” is, of course, the introduction of the premium app version in February 2021.

ZARA Ecommerce

All ‘non-essential’ stores were forced to remain closed for the better part of a year, which accelerated changes that were already in motion around the world. This resulted in a shift to online shopping, meaning that they had to turn all of their efforts to online presence and e-commerce in order to still make a profit and reduce losses. Many companies and brands invested in improving their online user experiences.

What did you want to become a year or ten years back?

As any teenager could tell you, some people wanted to be actors, and some wanted to be football players. Some wished to be the “best” in what they did, and some wanted to be the “student of life” and see further than others. Some wanted to command respect, and some wanted to go far ahead. Some wanted to play for the “team” but not be thought of as a member of that team.

Why did those people want to be, and what would they have done differently?

The thing which I have noticed over the years is that most people who were passionate about what they did, ended up not doing what they chose because it was for the benefit of others. If you are in a team sport perhaps you are looked up to by your team and supported by them. They might encourage you, pay you for your efforts, and maintain the side of the team that you are called on to play on in times of need. If I am "the guy” then I will be the supporter, the guy who pays the player, and the guy who allows that player to express themselves freely. I will make them feel valued and competent, but I will not in any way drain them of their energy, or take advantage of the time they are given.

Instead, I strive to provide my team and my clients with the best technology and the best resources possible to help them deliver their best. In my first meeting to get to know my team, I asked them right away: what do you want to become in one or two years from now?

Make "empower" more than just a buzzword.

I am always looking for ways to incorporate energy from others and give my team a task to help them start, support, recover, and resume their daily routine. I never want them to feel that they are disappointed, infuriated, or undervalued.

To me, a tech startup can be seen as a company run with integrity and discipline, governed by innovation and a humanized culture set by a team of, well, people, with the absolute right to make decisions for the benefit of themselves and the company.

I was told MBAs shouldn't do design, but business.

I saw the power of making my best decision when I was told I couldn't do design because I got an MBA and should pursue business management, instead. Surprisingly or not, today the most wanted skill in designers is indeed business-related skills and I use it as a core value to prospect for my product design freelance projects.

Your path is the right path. Everyone has a story that fits.

I may have a varied background, and I suspect that this gained me some unnecessary skills compared to the ones who followed one straight-line path, but I insist to stick with the idea that learning is ALWAYS the right path, either way.
