๐๐ธ An e-tour through Petaling Street ๐๐ธ
๐ Hey Foodies and Travellers! ๐
My name is Julie and I will be your personal online guide to the wonderful world of Malaysia! In this monthโs newsletter, Iโll be taking you to a delightful gastronomic journey through the bustling and vibrant streets of Kuala Lumpur's Petaling Street, a legendary destination that has and continues to capture the hearts of locals and tourists alike.
Petaling Street is one of our favourite go-tos here at Simply Enak due to its vibrant allure, lively spirit, and culinary wonders! Letโs dive in and discover what makes a visit to Chinatown an unforgettable adventure!
๐๏ธ A Brief History of Petaling Street ๐๏ธ
Did you know that back in the late 1800s, Petaling Street was a humble tin mining settlement?
Yes, thatโs right! Miners from far and wide flocked to this bustling enclave, turning it into a melting pot of cultures and commerce. As time passed, Petaling Street evolved into Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown, a vibrant hub where Chinese traders set up shop, bringing with them a kaleidoscope of traditions and delicacies. Imagine the enticing aroma of spices, the clinking of teapots, and the vibrant lanterns adorning the facades of bustling shophouses!
Petaling Street is now in the heart of Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown. The name "Petaling" itself comes from the Chinese word "Pai-ting," meaning "to level" or "to even," signifying the levelling of the street's terrain during its early development.

I honestly love stepping into Petaling Street because it is a captivating world of the different cultures in Malaysia all in one street. Not just that, there is a bit of something for everyone! From shopping to eating and sightseeing, the list goes on!
Petaling Street is really famous for being a shopper's paradise! Here, haggling is a very common practice as visitors try to get the best deals on clothing, trinkets, and souvenirs.
History buffs will be fascinated by the charming architecture and historic landmarks, such as the striking Sri Mahamariamman Temple and the iconic Chan See Shu Yuen Clan House.

Hereโs a fun fact for you! Since the 19th century, Petaling Street has been known as a market square! Petaling Street has been a hub of the city and has seen a few cultural evolutions.
Generations of Cantonese and Hakkas have lived here, blending with the community to build Chinese temples, mouthwatering Chinese cuisine, pubs, and restaurants.
The history of Petaling Street would be incomplete without its culinary treasures. The street became a paradise for food enthusiasts, with hawkers dishing out mouthwatering delights. From the smoky allure of char kway teow to the flavorful delight of Hokkien mee, the street is a treasure trove of mouthwatering Malaysian Chinese street!

Ho Kow Kopitam is one of the few eateries to have held strong during the change. It is an antique cafe that has been managed by a Hianese family for many years. It was founded in 1956.

There are also Chinese bakeries that date back to the late 19th century (established in 1893 to be exact!). Kwai Chai Hong or The Little Demon's Alley in English, contains pre-war shophouses, is one of the market's most well-known locations and there is where one of our favourite stops is Bunn Choon.
Bunn Choon's family's delectable pastries have been handed down through the years and are a must try! Their egg tarts with a crisp, toasty crust were Bunn Choon's most well-known specialty. The Bunn Choon generations are renowned for their distinctive traditional egg tarts, and subsequently, the charcoal-flavoured crust was added in recent years.
There is a selection of Chinese pastries which are just as good! You may eat these with a hot cup of tea. We also recommend trying The 'Siew Bao', Pineapple Sticks, Coconut Pineapple Tarts, Almond Tarts, and BBQ Pork Pie!
