With the holidays and celebrations upon us, this time of year, family gatherings are common! Whether it’s the holidays, end-of-school parties, or other gatherings, you might feel that keeping a healthy routine can be difficult.
Many of us approach this season in one of two ways – “all out” or “all in”!
The “all out approach”, usually fosters feelings of restriction and resentment, sometimes not attending gatherings due to fear of going off course with a regimented diet plan. The “all in approach” leads to mindless overindulgence and soon after feelings of shame/guilt.
It doesn’t have to be “all out” or “all in”! With awareness around your choices, you will set yourself up for enjoying the foods you love, without the negative feelings associated with them! Below are some helpful tips to help you enjoy the upcoming holidays and gatherings!
- Be kind to yourself: Food isn’t just for fuel – it also represents community! There’s a reason we celebrate with cake and gather around Easter brunch! If you want that sweet treat, think about what it represents in that moment – (is it a connection of family, a family tradition, just wanting something sweet?). Then enjoy without guilt! As you celebrate, take in the conversations around you, the small treats, and stay present! Lean in and celebrate all while understanding that a day/occasion does not define your diet and you will get back on track. 80/20 balance is the key!
- Journal: Having a plan can be key for success! Write down your intentions for the day - whether you’re planning to get in an extra serving of vegetables, play a board game with the family, or exercise. Having a plan can help you feel successful in meeting your goals for the day and keeping a positive mindset.
- Be Grateful: It has been proven that expressing gratitude can greatly improve mental and emotional health. Write down 3 things daily that you’re grateful for in your journal or share with others during a moment of gratitude. Staying present with family, and appreciating the small things in life, helps to keep a healthy mindset and boosts our mood.
- Hydrate: An extra cup of joe, or an alcoholic beverage, can cause dehydration and lead to sluggish feelings or mindless eating. Instead of continuously having the fill up a glass, try carrying a water bottle with you throughout the day so that drinking water frequently becomes second nature. This will help you stay hydrated, support your metabolism, and help you feel better the next morning
- Get your 8 hours! Sleep is a key to the foundation of a healthy lifestyle. Your schedule may change as you gather and celebrate. Make a plan to get at a minimum 8 hours of sleep.
- Breathe: Seems simple, but as stress creeps in and our schedules change, our breathing can become shallow, affecting our moods and health. We believe in the power of breath for overall health! Set a timer a couple of times a day, to stop and take five, deep breaths. You’ll continue to feel energized, calm, and present.
Our approach to life and nutrition is simple, it’s about balance! Be present and enjoy the community and gatherings around you! It doesn’t have to be “all out” or “all in”. True nourishment is not just about food, but being our best selves – physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
From our family to yours, enjoy the upcoming holidays, celebrations, and time with your loved ones!
