Excerpt from The Ballast's Bride

“Will you tell me now what troubles you?” he asked, concern tugging the corners of his wide mouth down as he ducked under the edge of the addoc’s canopy. “I have to go back to the gate, but I don’t want to leave you smelling so sour.”

She swatted his impervious chest with the back of her hand. “I don’t smell sour.”

He chuckled. “You do. Your honey isn’t so sweet when you’re sorrowful.”

“My honey?” A curious thread of heat ran through her at the word. Did he mean—? Of course, he didn’t. Hinri wouldn’t bring it up even if he had inevitably caught the scent of her arousal over the years, times when she couldn’t resist touching herself after a particularly intriguing chapter in one of her novels. He was always very kind to gloss over that kind of thing and give her the illusion of privacy.

“Ah. Yes.” Hinri got inarticulate when he was flustered, though of course, his granite-like skin didn’t give anything away. “You smell like a whole onga hive when you’re happy.”

That made her smile. In all these years, she’d never asked him what she smelled like. She’d assumed some scent specific to her, something undefinable like a fingerprint or a proper name. But she loved knowing that she smelled like the beautiful, iridescent insects who were responsible for pollinating her flowers. It was a little piece of pleasure she could tuck away in her memory to soothe her when there was no one to scent her sadness and seek to comfort her. When she was in a strange land, married to a stranger, without her flowers or her giant.

She was going to start crying if she didn’t stop thinking about it. “I hope you’re not saying that because I buzz about your ears and annoy you. Because onga don’t only make honey. They can also sting!”

Hinri laughed obligingly as he set her down beside her abandoned carra-root disaster, but she could tell she hadn’t fooled him. He plucked up the trowel she’d dropped in the dirt and handed it back to her. “Tell me the truth, Mimma Who Can Also Sting. You’re trying to distract me so you don’t have to answer my question.”

She couldn’t look at him when she said the words, so she dug into the dirt, loosening it so the carra roots could grow. So they’d be big enough for him to eat after she was gone. “I’m leaving, Hinri. In two days, I’ll board a boat to cross the Salten Sea.”

He rumbled a noise of understanding. “I’ll miss you while you’re gone. But we can play again when you return to the estate. I hear the voyage is quite safe, if that’s what is worrying you.”

She stabbed her trowel into the dirt like a knife through her own heart. “You don’t understand. I’m getting married. I’m not coming back.”
