Before we get too far, you should know that my upcoming release, The Ballast’s Bride, has an extra-extra-large giant hero (even giant-er than the last one). It has a hasty arranged marriage and a treacherous sea voyage. It features a lot of pining and a daring escape. But it does not have tentacles in it, per say. Not exactly. So don’t get too excited.
That said, it has a little fairytale within the story that does involve tentacles, sort of, and I thought you might like to hear part of it. And then maybe see a naughty little illustration to go with.
Ah ha, now I have your attention.
The Wave Wife
Many legends have been told about the early years after the humans crashed their ship on Salaan, about the war between the humans and the Nightborn and the uneasy peace that followed. One such tale is that of the Wave Wife.
As the story goes, there was once a young woman who was so disagreeable that when her guardian arranged her betrothal, she refused to even learn her intended’s name.
“If I am not to choose my marriage bed,” she declared, “I would rather lay down in the sea bed and wed the waves.”
She was a fair woman and thus had many other suitors, but every one her guardian introduced, she stubbornly refused, saying the same words: “If I am not to choose my husband, then I will marry the Salten Sea.”
There came a day when only one eligible man remained in the island colony who had not been rejected by her. “You must marry him,” her guardian told her, “for there are no others, and you cannot survive alone on this harsh new planet.”
Seeing reason, she reluctantly donned her bridal finery. But when the time came for the ceremony, she refused to say the words of binding and instead walked into the sea and lay down in its shallows.
Enamored of her pearl-like beauty, the Salten Sea pulled her out into the deep, and she forever became a wife to the waves. You can see her lacy garments floating in the whitecaps to this day.
Of course, that’s not what really happened.

(True story, I drew this last fall as a gift for my husband. Mr. Hill specifically requested tentacles, and who am I do deny the man I love what he wants for his birthday?)
