August Newsletter - First Draft, Good News, and News I'm not too sure about ...

Hello from Sydney, and welcome to any new subscribers wherever you are in the world. I hope this newsletter finds you all well.
This month I have good news, and news I’m not too sure about …
The good news is that I’m now 10,000 words into the first draft of my new book. Very loosely connected to Another Time and Place, it started out as a novella, but at this stage I’m not sure how long it’s going to end up. I’m not an author who plans books out in any detail. I have a basic road map before I begin, and I do a lot of work on developing the characters, and then the story kind of writes itself. When it’s going well, the characters take over and tell their own story. So far, it is going well, so I guess I’ll just have to wait and see!
But for me the first draft is the greatest pleasure of writing – watching the story unfold, the characters coming to life. I have tried plotting out in detail before starting the first draft and it pretty much sucked all the joy out of the process, so I haven't done it again.
The news I’m not too sure about is that I was made redundant from my part time job a couple of weeks ago. On the plus side, I didn’t really like the job all that much, and now I have more time to write. On the minus side, I need to do a couple of days a week in addition to the writing, so I’m looking for something else. As most people will agree, looking for a job isn't fun.That said, the books are more successful than they’ve ever been, so I’m hoping that soon I can just write full time. Fingers crossed!
What I’m reading – Foundation by Isaac Asimov
Inspired by the TV show and my son’s ongoing recommendation, I’m finally reading this book. It’s not much like the TV show but I’m liking it immensely. I can quite see why it became such a classic.
What I’m watching - Silo
A dystopian mystery thriller series, this has got me completely hooked.
