More rain, novellas, and isolation.

Hi

Hello from Sydney where it is once again raining torrentially! I suppose it's good weather for staying indoors and reading and writing, although I usually manage to get outside for at least a bit of walk between downpours – I tend to go a bit stir crazy if I’m in the house all day. Thankfully there’s no flooding where I am, but other parts of the state haven’t been so lucky.

Life continues to be interesting – I've just spent a week in isolation with Covid-19, which finally caught up with me. Happily, Mr G has been home and able to look after me – I could get used to having my meals served in bed! I’m recovered now, although still a bit weary – I think it can take a while to shake off the last of the effects.

This morning I had the orientation for my new job, which officially starts next week. Everyone seems very friendly (which is always a relief at a new place of work!). I think it’s going to be good, and I’m definitely not going to miss the old 2-hour commute!

In the last few days I’ve finally got back to writing and am currently doing the final edits of my new novella, The Last Goodbye before I send it off to my editor in a couple of weeks, which is exciting. I’ve never written a novella before, but it just seemed to be the right format for a story that’s been in my head for years. I hope you’re going to like it.

Out of the Ashes continues to get good reviews. One Netgalley Reviewer said,

“I wish that I could give Out of the Ashes more than five stars, because I absolutely would if I could!”

Reviews like that make any writer happy – we’re really quite easy to please!

In addition, this month Out of the Ashes is part of a terrific BookFunnel New Release Promotion!

What I’m Reading - The Reader by Bernard Schlink

I finally listened to The Reader (as an audiobook) by Bernhard Schlink, which has been on my list for far too long. A compelling exploration of the generational conflict in Germany after the war, the novel poses difficult questions about the nature of understanding, condemnation and forgiveness. It’s not for the fainthearted, but I couldn’t put it down. Highly, highly recommended.

What I’m watching - Last Tango in Halifax

Stuck in bed with Covid, I binge-watched the first three seasons of a British family drama called Last Tango in Halifax. When an elderly couple meet again after a misunderstanding 60 years before, they decide to get married, much to the surprise of their families. As the relationship progresses, the two families face their own problems. Perceptive and wry, it was rightly acclaimed for its sensitive depiction of older people. I’m looking forward to sitting down for Season 4!
