Can Planting trees stop climate change?

Dear friend,

The climate crisis that we are currently experiencing is a result its said of burning fossil fuels that are releasing Giga tones of CO2 and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere which is stopping some of the suns heat from leaving our atmosphere and therefore warming the planet.

Human activity is also responsible for deforesting huge areas of the planets forests greatly reducing biodiversity and disrupting water cycles and the buffering effects of trees.

Tree planting can be extremely effective method for creating local micro-climates that are much more moderate, an example would be a city with almost no tree cover that during the hot summer days will absorb the heat from the sun and amplify the temperature (black roads and dark buildings), at night time the city would remain very hot as buildings continue to slowly release the heat back into the cooler night air.  Alternatively, if a city is planted with trees the city automatically becomes much cooler in the summer, due to shading and the cooling effects of evapotranspiration.   Cold winter winds can also be reduced by the presence of trees which can help slow and lift winds. To live in a city with little tree cover, would also be quite ugly, trees have natural beauty that buildings struggle to match. Planting trees strategically in cities will greatly offset climate change in cities and increase bio-diversity and overall beauty. If fruit and nut trees are incorporated into the design then city residents might also benefit from food production.  When you park your car in the summer do you prefer to park it under the shade of a tree?

What about tree planting across the globe to reduce climate change? Currently we are still burning enormous amounts of fossil fuels, so even if we restored all the worlds forests it would not match the amount of CO2 that is released into our atmosphere, that is why it is so important to stop the burning of fossil fuels on such a massive scale. We absolutely should be going ahead and planting forests that are appropriate to the local climate and needs of the local population, creating habitat for conservation, beauty for recreation, food for consummation, CO2 sequestration, O2 production, timber for construction, the list is much longer for all the benefits that trees and especially forests can give us.

Trees are a fascinating subject and, in my course, a step-by-step introduction to Permaculture we delve deeper into the subject of trees and how you can get involved. Plus much more.

In summary, to answer my first question can planting trees stop climate change? The answer is yes, on a local micro-climate trees can have a massive effect, and if we stop the burning of fossil fuels then forests will be an important part of the solution that will help us rebalance our planets macro-climates.

Its rainy season here in Colombia, so on the Love Grows farm we have been busy planting trees this month, by investing in my course, you will also be supporting our tree planting activities and training courses here at the Love Grows farm. Even if you don't have access to land to plant trees, you can support projects like Love Grows and we can plant trees with your support. If you would like more information about sponsoring a tree, feel free to email me.
