Secrets of soil

Hi there, I hope your well, its been a little while since I sent you any correspondence so I wanted to give an update on a few things and share some others.

As September closes out and we welcome in October for you it may be harvest time or indeed spring, depending on your location. Here in Colombia, it is rainy season, so I have been busy planting next years Yuka (Cassava) and transplanting things like Pineapple, its also a great time to plant trees as their roots get a time to establish before the dry summer comes along.

I want to talk about soil. Soil is one of the major things that you can focus on to have the greatest impact in your growing success. Let’s just set the foundation, when I say soil, I’m thinking top soil, which is like a skin that covers our entire planet. When I say soil, I’m not talking about dirt! Dirt is lifeless substrate that holds little benefit to other organisms, but we can transform dirt into soil with a bit of work or time.

So, what is soil? Soil is full of life, in one handful of healthy biologically active soil you can have billions of microscopic organisms, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes etc. Now you may have the reaction and think bacteria, their bad right! Well in most parts no, their really good and part of a healthy balanced system, even our body is heavily reliant on bacteria to help us thrive. Soil is also made up of sand, clay and silt plus organic material often referred to as humus. Now your local soil will have a certain ratio of those minerals and that will determine the overall look and feel of your local soil. What you would love is rich loamy soil full of live and dark in humus, you may be starting from something else though.

So, why do plants need soil and not dirt? Plants suck water up through their roots, and in that water, they take up nutrients, so if all the nutrients in the soil are water soluble then the plant can absorb them, but mostly they are not all water soluble, some are trapped in rocks and plants don’t normally eat rock! The good news however is that bacteria and fungi can eat rock via enzymes! Here’s the clever bit, cooperation, the plants and the microbes cooperate. The plant sends out a chemical message that works like a shopping list, the microbes receive the wish list and go out and find items and then bring them back to the plant in a water-soluble form, the plant gives them sugars in return. This relationship is key to understanding how you can increase your gardens yield without the need for expensive and damaging chemicals.

Soil is one part of my Permaculture course that I have filmed and built for you to quickly understand the important concepts that are vital to build a thriving system.

As a farmer, a parent and permaculture teacher, I know how important it is that we eat well and how with a bit of effort and knowledge how YOU can quickly build a thriving system that would feed your family amazing, healthy, organic food, that would be nice right?

Join me, and grow amazing healthy organic food. The course is suitable for anyone and the information is not dependant on any particular climate or size of land.
