Hi

What will I do if the supermarket runs out of food? Did you ask yourself that question in the last 2 years? Many people did and it scared them. We are going through uncertain times and having a certain amount of self-sufficiency can be very beneficial and rewarding at the same time.

If you’re like me, I grew up in a city and was totally reliant on the supermarket or grocery store to provide almost 100% of my food. So, what would I have done years before if the stores had no food… fishing comes to mind, well perhaps I wouldn’t have starved after all…! If you ask me the same question now, I would still have the fishing option and also, I would be able to go to my garden and harvest enough food to keep me well fed, plus I would be able to identify some wild plants and fruits that are readily available throughout most of the year.

If you have your own garden, then you can easily and quickly convert all or part of it into a food garden.

Most of us have lawns that require our time and energy to maintain them and give very little benefit in return. Now here’s the thing about lawns, they are made of grass... yeah Russ of course!

Well grass is one of the big survivors of our planet. If you decide to convert your lawn into a vegie garden to grow amazing healthy organic food and take back your food security then you would be doing a great thing.

So, you grab your garden fork and start to remove the grass. Wow what a lot of work! So, you seemingly and with much effort, remove all the grass. Now you plant seeds of your favourite heirloom varieties of vegetables and you come back a couple of weeks later to find that now you have a mix of vegies and lots of grass…doh! The question is how to prepare a vegetable garden from a lawn successfully and without a ton of work?

The answer is surprisingly simple, have you ever gone camping? After a few days of your tent being on healthy green grass, it starts to turn yellow, yep plants need sunlight... Back to your lawn, mow the lawn as short as possible, soak it with water, then take a material that you can use to cover the lawn that you want to convert to a vegetable garden, place that material on the floor, secure it so grass cannot grow through and leave it! That’s it, so simple, remove the cover after around 6 weeks and the grass will be dead.

Now the grass is dead you can add compost onto the uncovered surface and plant seeds or transplant into the new area. You may wish to de-compact the soil with either a garden fork or broad fork to increase the sponginess of the soil, so your new plants can easily grow and establish a good root network.

I cover what a broad fork is and why its better to use no till gardening in my online course. Take advantage of Octobers 50% price reduction only available to mailing list subscribers like you.
