A cooler day today has the cherries bouncing back after the heat. We have a few rows of large trees loaded with cherries ready for picking - or to get lost amongst the wild cherry forest! These trees are less manicured than the rest of the orchard as they are next on teh renewal program. They are big and have lots of cherries. The size seems to have helped protect them from the weather.

Loads of cherries, super sweet.

Also open for picking are the Morello sour cherries

Sunflower picking is now open also. Bring your Christmas shirts for a fun photo in the sunflowers!

Morello sour cherries

This is the time of season when I am loving the morello sour cherries. A very different fruit, super sour, packed with flavour and goodness and oh so pretty. If you know, you know... some customers are very excited by the morellos.

I am fascinated by this fruit and how special it is in many different cultures. I love hearing the many different recipes and uses that our sour cherry customers have. It has me wondering why this special fruit is not something we usually see in Australia. I suspect it's because they are too delicate for the mainstream supply chains.

We've had them fresh with cheese. After a long hot day yesterday we muddled them in cold water for a very refreshing, healthy drink.

Some recipes we love are:

  • Persian sour cherry rice - Albaloo Polo with chicken or meatballs, this is truly delicious. It's really worth buying some Morellos from us in this short season just to try that dish.
  • Sour cherry liquer - into sugar and spirit, may be fermented a little first
  • Jam - these really are best for jam
  • Fruit leather or paste of sour cherry with salt
  • Greek Sour cherry spoon sweet - Vyssino Glyko Koutaliou for icecream
  • Hungarian sour cherry soup
  • Black forest cake.

Thank-you for all your support this season.

Cherry cheers
