At the orchard
Cherries are available at the orchard daily from 7:30 am until 5pm for boxed sales from the cherry shed.
Pick your own is open each morning 7:30 - 11am (beat the heat)
Morello Sour Cherries
These little bombs of sour and flavour are at various stages of ripeness.
Ready for picking at a red-ripe stage this week, wait a bit for black ripe.
With a warm week ahead that could be next weekend. Usually it's been after Christmas!
Pick Your own
So wonderful to see many families and visitors back in the orchard over the past week. We had a few lovely family groups today who have made it 10 years of cherry picking with us! It's so special to help create special traditions and memories for these families.
We can open again over this week and next weekend as the cherries are holding up much better than I had imagined when we saw last week's weather. One block is still taking time to ripen. I have now reopened bookings for pick your own.
The cherry season rollercoaster
Thank-you for following this journey with us this season. Itβs been a wild rollercoaster of weather. Thankfully the gamble on extra inputs to dry and protect the cherries seems to have paid off. The Simone cherries have survived the rain.
In many blocks I had done some major renewal pruning, this stimulated a lot of leafy growth which seem to have helped to protect the cherries (sun on cherries before they dry can cause more splitting). There are some fabulous sizes in there and they are super juicy. We hope this weekβs sunshine will help to move sugars into the cherries.
Interestingly, the Simones coloured up early in the heatwave, but then with all the water movement it has taken longer to get the sugars moving. So after scrambling to start picking early, then hitting pause for more ripening we are only a couple of days ahead of normal.
Thank-you for supporting our family farm.
