Welcome back to Argren – a kick-ass epic fantasy series about witches and rebels who take on an evil oligarchy!
Welcome all new members to the world of Argren! Those of you who are immersed in the world know the Vollen Empire is bent on subjugating the Alle’oss, seeing the land and its people only as a source of resources and slaves. The Alle’oss must learn to fight back without succumbing to the avarice that infects the Volloch. How do they hold true to who they are in the face of evil? The Alle’oss celebrate the simple pleasures of daily life, storytelling and art, and build community with anyone who does the same. A Code Switch podcast on Joy as an act of resistance really captures this concept.

Another book I just finished: Mother of Trees, the first book in the Thaumatropic Root Series. I LOVE this cover. And like a lot of fantasy readers, I do love a good origin story and a multifaceted series. Plus who doesn’t love this about the author? Engineer, husband, and father of three wonderful girls by day. Fantasy fiction writer by night (and other random times he's not taxiing kids, pulling hair out of drains, helping with math and science homework, coaching soccer, remodeling rooms, and walking the dogs).
I know I’m burying the lead here, but the publication date for Oss’stera is just a few days away. Early reviews have been wonderful. If you are not sure which book to start with, this is the shortest book of the two series and reads like a stand-alone.
If you want to start at the very beginning of the adventure, we are doing a Goodreads giveaway of Argren Blue in September.
News from Argren Faire
Shout out to all the authors who are participating in Authors Alley! We have 10 authors scheduled to sign books and read from their latest novels. Here is a few pix from last year’s event, including a reading by Nick Johnson, the audiobook narrator for Dead Egyptians by Del Blackwater.
What we’re reading
Deb just finished The Fifth Season, the first book in The Broken Earth Series, by NK Jemison. Highly recommend if you are a fan of Octavia Butler and the Afro-futurism subgenre of fantasy.
What if the Arab World had not been colonized, and instead discovered a powerful source of magic? A Master of Djinn by P. Djeli Clark was our August Firkins and Fantasy book club read.
What we love about Milwaukee
Ross and Deb have lived all over the country and Milwaukee has more per capita green space than all the other cities combined, a result of visionary naturalists and socialist city planners. Just don’t tell anyone, because we like it the way it is.
