Halfway Through July, and Still Standing
Jul 16, 2026 12:01 pm
Well, here we are... halfway through July. Have I ever mentioned that July kinda sucks?
For one-- it's hot here in the northern hemisphere, and hot is not my favorite sort of weather. As I mentioned in my last email, for the last 10 years now, it has also come with a rather brutal anniversary to try to ignore, and, this year... LOL!
First, the little window air conditioning unit I bought to keep the hobo house workable while I'm parked here at the Nevada house long term, stopped cooling. Now I'm in talks with tech support to see if they are going to warranty it, since it's only 2 months old.
Then, the air conditioning unit in the house went out. The house AC is close to fifty years old and is a commercial unit (the house was used as a business for about that long.) There's a part that is allowing refrigerant to leak, but the part isn't made anymore and the refrigerant has been banned in the US.
There are some exceptions that allow old units like ours to be recharged, but it's ridiculously expensive-- still not as expensive as a new unit, however, so we decided to get it partially recharged and now we are hoping it makes it through the summer.
I took a week for a road trip in the SUV, leaving the hobo house camper behind and traveling light. It was a nice break and I ended up camping on the northern California coastline for a few nights in the deliciously cold beach air with zero cell signal. It was a nice way to get out of the heat, and spend that anniversary contemplating how much life has changed for me over the last 10 years.
I got back to Fallon, feeling rested, reset, and ready to wrap up the construction projects on the camper, get back to my travels, and-- especially-- get back to writing!
*sad trombone sound*
I returned to discover that my freezer had glitched while I was gone-- the internal temperature was reading 81 degrees Fahrenheit. So, at 10 p.m. I spent three hours throwing away a lot of expensive groceries that were in no way going to be salvageable, and cleaning the freezer out.
The freezer works fine now-- tech support and I think we figured out what happened (it just got too hot while I was gone.)
Then, just when you'd think things were finally back on track... the plumbing in the house went out. We had a pipe fitting give way and flooded the basement.
It took 2 different plumber companies to get it fixed.
So, between the BFF and me, this month has been expensive and annoying-- and we're only halfway through it.
But there's light at the end of the tunnel...
We've had a few summer storms blow through and we always get these amazing rainbows afterward.
I'm making progress on both the trailer re-build projects and the next Rogue Ops book. But, as I've mentioned many times, I'm not good at multi-tasking at all, so both are going slower than I have patience for.
I promised Colorado Friend that I'd come see her this summer-- we both expected that to be back in early June, so I'm running a tad late.
Hobo house is almost road-worthy again, and I'm looking forward to finishing Cap and Cara's book from 8,000 feet at the end of my friend's pine-tree studded driveway. Then we're going to meet Sagan, and I honestly don't know if I'm more excited for Sagan or Leo's book.
That's the state of things for mid-July.
