Years in the service taught me to trust my gut, and my gut tells me that the woman hiding in my barn needs me to keep my mouth shut when a man comes around asking about a girlfriend who might have gotten lost on the hiking trail running near my property line.

One look, and I know I'm keeping the curvy little trespasser, but before I can give her the life she deserves, I'll have to protect her from the people who want her back.

Because it turns out, Natalie isn't running from an ex, she's in a far more dangerous situation-- and the man who came looking for her? He hasn't met his quota, and his time is running out.

Here's the view from the office this week; complete with my "I live in the desert now" paint job:

I'm way down on the southern end of the Oregon coast and I'm rather grumpy about how hot it is down here.

I got used to the foggy, cold coast line and was enjoying feeling like fall was on the way. Now it's sunny and warm and it feels like it's still summer.

Me and my pumpkin spice coffees don't love it.

I'm officially starting the homeward stretch back to Fallon soon with a list of things I want to fix, replace, or add to the hobo house before I plan my next long road trip.

So you're likely to be hearing a lot of "I wish I was on the road again" whining over the next several emails.

Meanwhile, it looks like Harlan Frost and his crew is getting their own series next. (Side-eyes pile of other books waiting to be written, then pretends not to see them.) Seriously, my "to be written" list is like most people's "to be read" lists!

I'll be back next week with a new office view and updates on what the plans are for Harlan's crew!

If you have ideas-- I'm open to hearing them.
