The Important Lesson I Learned From My Dog Peeing On the Floor

Do you look for lessons - opportunities for growth and improvement - when you face challenges?

I try to, and I want to share with you a lesson I learned from my dog last night.

My buddy, Uncle John, is a now 10-year old pitbull mix.

When I first adopted him, it was tough!

He would bounce all over my apartment.

He would steal recyclables and hide them under the couch.

He once ate a box of Oreos I had under my bed!

As he's gotten older, he's mellowed out and become very chill.

He's certainly not as spry as he used to be, taking his time to get up, go up and down stairs, and even when playing with other dogs.

Anyways, last night, after I was already in bed, I hear him walk to his water bowl, drink his water, and then all of a sudden, I hear it - the sound of him peeing on the floor!

Here's the thing - Uncle John is definitely house-trained.

In the past, he's only had a few incidents when he's not feeling well.

I'm unsure what was up with him last night, but as you may imagine, I was upset that, right as I'm falling asleep, I have to get up to clean dog urine.

Part of me wanted to yell and curse at him, make him know that what he did was wrong.

But he knew it. He just really had to go.

Before I let him have it, I thought about it.

This was the responsibility I took on when I became a dog owner all those years ago.

Sure, there are the ups of companionship, having a cool dog to meet people in the neighborhood, seeing kids faces light up when they pet him.

But with that, I also signed up for the challenges - when he ate a box of Oreos, when he cut his tongue eating a jar of peanut butter, and when he goes on the floor.

When we make a choice, we have to take responsibility for all the good stuff, as well as the challenges.

This got me thinking about my online business.

So many people I know are struggling with money.

Hours reduced or let go. Their business was closed down. An injury or health issue has come up.

These are some of the challenges that we've got to accept as part of life - not just the good stuff, but also the sad and frustrating and worrying parts.

I could have spent my time yelling at Uncle John last night, but that wouldn't help what I was facing.

I got up from bed, got my mop and bucket, did my best Akeem from 'Coming to America' and cleaned it up.

And that's also what I encourage people I meet every day to do - circumstances may be tough, but it isn't going to get better without taking some decisive action.
