Excerpt:

I opened the garage and walked the bike out. Placing the helmet on my head, I flung my leg over and started the engine. The power rumbled between my legs, and my achy ass noticed the vibration right away. I quickly took note of the bells and whistles. I’d driven a motorcycle before, once and had a blast, but I didn't have a bike license and prayed I wouldn’t get pulled over. I pulled the clutch lever then shifted down to the first gear. So far, so good. Then slowly released the lever as I gradually rolled the throttle. The bike began to move, and I let out a sigh of relief. I fully released the clutch and gave a little more throttle.

Riding down King’s private property, I felt like a queen. The huge smile on my face was hidden by the helmet. I was proud of me; things were going good. But when I arrived at the end of the private road, I looked at the stretch of highway that would take me to the park. I knew it wouldn’t be a long ride, but still, I hesitated. I wrestled with the pros and cons of taking his bike without permission and without the proper license. Would he be mad at me if he found out? Hell ya, he would be; stealth was required to not get my backside tanned.

I pulled my phone out of my back pocket and quickly sent a text that I’d gone for a stroll to Kennedy Park, then being the chicken I was, turned off my phone and tucked it back in my pocket.

Deciding to go for it, I maneuvered the bike right and was about to pull out when a hand came down on the throttle scaring the shit out of me. I screamed, the bike bounced, and the only reason I didn’t fall off was that a strong arm snaked around my middle and pulled me off just in time.

I hung in midair, very much like a cavewoman tucked under the arm of her much more significant, ferocious caveman.

“And where did you think you were going, young lady?” King placed me on my feet.

“Didn’t you get my text? To the watering hole.” His phone beeped. “You mean that text. The one you sent as you were about to leave, so I couldn't stop you?” His eyes narrowed dangerously.

“I—how the hell did you get here so fast? Are you following me?”

“You are on dangerous ground, Amara; how about you tell me what you’re up to, and then I’ll answer your question.”
