“But I want to know if you’re going to spank me?”
“I don’t think so, not while you’re pregnant with our child, but don’t you fret, babygirl, there are gonna be consequences. You put yourself in danger by disobeying me, and I can’t let that go.”

“Annie, are you okay?” Dan asked anxiously. His wife was sobbing. What the hell had happened? Wrenching the car door open, he took Annie into his arms. “What’s wrong? Is it the baby?”
“No, Daddy, it’s Hildy, she’s disappeared.”
“What? When? How?”
“She had to pee, I helped her out of the car, but she was worried you or Nate would arrive and see her, so she insisted I help her further into the forest. We didn’t go far into the trees. I moved away to give her some privacy, but when I went back, she’d vanished. I called and called but there was no reply. Daddy, what if she’s been murdered!”
“Hush, baby, I’m sure she’s fine. Nate will find her,” he soothed. He looked through the tall trees to the darker gloom and shuddered. He hoped Nate would find his girl. Hildy was the first woman his brother had shown any serious interest in since his honorable discharge from the army. His wife’s weeping eased. Annie was his responsibility, he needed to focus on her right now. “Let’s get you over to my truck and head on home; you need to rest.”
She reared back, shifting away from him along the seat. “I’m not leaving without knowing Hildy is safe!”
“Oh yes you are. You’re in so much trouble, little girl, using the backroad when I specifically told you to stick to highways.” He held out his hand and counted off her infractions on his fingers. “You left your cell at home. You didn’t bring a dart gun—”
“I left you a note!”
“Which didn’t tell me where the hell you’d gone. Enough already! Get out of Nate’s truck, Annie, or so help me, pregnant or not, I’ll blister your backside—Move!” To his immense relief, she compiled. Using his Dom voice always worked.
“What about my car?” she asked, twisting to look back at the vehicle.
“Lee will pick it up. I’m sorry, I should have mentioned it had an intermittent electrical problem.”
“In that case, I’d say we were about quits, Daddy!”
“Well, I wouldn’t, and since I’m the Daddy. We’ll be discussing this at home after you’ve had some nourishment and a rest.”
“O-h, Daddy,” she whined.
Lips twitching, he started the truck, relieved he had his girl safe, back under his protection.
Arriving at the ranch, he parked and removed his keys from the ignition. His phone beeped. “It’s Nate. He says he’s found Hildy. She’s safe but he’s taking her directly to get her leg x-rayed, he’ll keep us posted.”
“Thank goodness!”
Dan carried her into their part of the house and into the bedroom, where he deposited her gently on the side of the bed. “Lie back and rest, I’m going to fetch you some water and heat you some soup.”
“Dan?”
“Yeah, baby?”
“I’m really sorry I forgot my phone.”
“I am more concerned that you deliberately disobeyed me and took the
backroad, but right now, I need to make sure you and the baby are fed and rested. We’ll talk about the rest later—”
“But I want to know if you’re going to spank me?”
“I don’t think so, not while you’re pregnant with our child, but don’t you fret, babygirl, there are gonna be consequences. You put yourself in danger by disobeying me, and I can’t let that go.”
