“So, Nick the Christmas Tree Man”—pale eyes dancing with amusement, Michelle tilted her head to the side, and he got the distinct impression he was being sized up—“what do you do when it’s not Christmas time? Do you stay hidden away in your workshop, making toys with your elves?”
“In a sense.” Finally, steady, familiar ground. “You can’t just plant some seeds and wait a couple years for the perfect Christmas tree to grow. We spend most of the year planting, treating for insects and fungus, shearing the trees, things like that. It’s pretty much a year-round operation.”
“See?” Eyes lighting up, Allie bounced in her seat. “That’s all stuff you could be sharing with the public! People love to see the ‘behind the scenes’ stuff that goes into a business.”
“Allison.” This time, Michelle’s voice held significantly more warning, and on his other side Allison huffed loudly.
“I’m just saying,” she mumbled.
Taking pity on her, Nick smiled. “I appreciate the offer. But I’m just really not all that tech savvy.”
“But see, that’s the thing, you don’t have to be! We do all that for you and—”
“Allison Rae McClane, if you say one more word about work, I am going to find a corner for you to go stick your nose in.”
Allison sighed heavily, but she glanced up at him through her lashes with a sheepish smile. “Sorry. I get carried away sometimes.”
The urge to pick her up and cuddle her was so strong, he physically had to grip the table to keep his hands off of her. What the hell was wrong with him? “It’s okay. I get that way sometimes, too.”
“Ugh, tell me about it.” Across the table, Sadie rolled her eyes. “Don’t get him started on the different types of Christmas trees, or we’ll be here all night.”
“She’s right.” He sent Sadie a wink before focusing his attention back on Allie. “So… McClane, huh? Did you get a lot of Die Hard jokes as a kid?”
“So many.” Allison added her own eye roll. “And Michelle has already informed me that when we get married, she’s taking my name, because Die Hard is her favorite Christmas movie. Sometimes I think it’s the only reason she puts up with me.”
“I put up with you because you’re adorable, and you have an incredibly spankable ass.” Lifting her wine glass to her lips, Michelle grinned. “The last name is just a bonus.”
Smart, sexy, and amazing taste in movies? It figured fate would dangle the perfect woman right in front of him, only to make her completely off-limits.
And then there was cute, funny, bubbly Allison on his other side. Equally as perfect, in her own way. And equally as off-limits.
Fate really was a fickle bitch.
