Excerpt:
“I’ve been thinking about adding rules since your first playdate. The two of you need them.” Seth sipped from his mug. It was a dark navy-blue, and it said “Daddy” in huge balloon lettering. The sight of it made my heart smile.
“I already have rules, Daddy. Why do I need more?” Amanda gave her sweetest smile.
“Were you following the rules of the house when you came rushing through the front door like your feet were on fire?”
“No, Daddy.”
“Were you thinking about the rules when Kelsey collided with the hearth?”
“No, Sir.”
“I didn’t think so.” Seth set a piece of paper along with a pen in front of Amanda and me. “I’ve printed a copy for each of you, and there are lines at the bottom. Write each one down five times so that I know you’ve memorized them.”
“Daddy–”
“I’m not done.”
My sweet friend shut her mouth and pretended to lock it with a key. I took the pretend key in my hand and swallowed it.
Seth pinched the bridge of his nose. “I don’t want to hear feedback until you’ve had a chance to look them over in a more adult headspace. If you have no argument, then we’ll implement them the next time the two of you are at the house together.”
“Couldn’t we just take a picture with our phone?” I motioned to Amanda. “Then we’ll always have them.”
“You can take a photo, but I also want you to write them down.” His jaw twitched and he leaned forward in the chair. “Understood?”
“Yes.” I pouted at my failed attempt to save our hands from writing.
“Do you agree, Manda?”
Manda reached over, took the pretend key from my tummy and unlocked her mouth.
“Yes, Daddy.”
“Kelsey?”
“Um, sure,” I said. This was all very new to me, but rules made sense as they were something a man like Seth would have. Besides, I’d agree to almost anything to continue spending time in my Little space with my best friend.
“For today, there is no running in the house–”
“What about fast walking?” I interjected.
“Let me finish, Kelsey, otherwise you can listen to the rest of the conversation from the corner.”
“I have lotsa questions.”
“I will answer all of your questions, but please do not interrupt.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Thank you,” he acknowledged my apology. “No screaming. No running in the house. No gorging on sweets. No jumping off any surface, including the stairs.” Seth held up a finger for each rule. “Final rule, and it’s the most important. No lying.” He looked at us each in turn. “Do you agree to follow these rules today?”
“What happens if we break a rule?” I glanced at Manda.
She squeezed my upper arm. “We prolly get spanked.”
“What?” My head flipped around, and I stared at Seth. There was no way he would physically discipline me if I didn’t obey. Unless he would? No, he wouldn’t. We didn’t have that sort of dynamic, unless he was offering to change it. Was that what he was doing? I blinked over at him, and my heart beat faster. There was only one way to find out…
