Making eye contact, Astrid’s brow rose in question. I smiled in return, offering nothing further as I guided Shelby toward the door. Outside, I held her close to my chest, continuing the aftercare while she got her bearings. When the cab arrived to take her home, Shelby was fully alert.

“I’m glad, and don’t worry, I will speak with Astrid and Rafe regarding Peter and his date being banned. You don’t have to worry about being accosted by him while you’re at Midgard. Here is a free pass. Come back anytime you want.”
Her cheeks glowed in the light provided by the streetlamps, making her appear younger and more vulnerable than she was. The storm in her eyes had receded, the gray separating from the violet, giving her eyes an ethereal quality.
Leaning in the driver’s window, with a stern expression, I gave him her address. “Please ensure she makes it home safely and she’s in the building before you pull away.” I handed the driver a fifty-dollar bill. His eyes widened when I told him to keep the change.
I adjusted Shelby’s clothing and did up her seat belt. Finished fussing, I planted a gentle kiss on her forehead. Closing the door of the vehicle, I stepped back and watched until the cab was out of sight. Not wishing to go back inside and face a million inquisitive looks or outright questions, I got in my car and headed for home.
