“Hi! I saw your help wanted sign and I wondered if you’re still hiring?”

“I am, but it’s part-time. Most people in Mitford use the library, if they read at all. My name is Lilly. What’s yours?”

I held out my hand. “My name is Rose. Rose Marshall.” I immediately felt comfortable with her. She looked like someone who might have been a hippy when she was younger.

“Well, Lilly and Rose! Do you have any retail experience, Rose?”

“I worked in a store in Houston for three years, but it was…” I couldn’t help but begin to squirm under her inquisitive gaze. Despite my trepidation, I decided honesty was my best bet with Lilly. “Well, it was an ‘adult’ store. We sold a few books, but they were probably not the kind you sell!”

“I wouldn’t be so sure of that, Rose. Erotic romances are my best sellers!”

She didn’t look shocked or judgey, and I relaxed. “I just arrived last night. Jake–he’s a fireman–rescued me from the side of the road about ten miles from here. My car is probably unfixable, and I have almost no money. I need to work to save enough to go to join my friend in Chicago. I thought I had a job as a nanny waiting for me, but it fell through.”

“Jake McTavish is a good guy. So are the other firemen, for that matter. So, where are you staying now?”

“Um, at the fire station.”

Lilly roared with laughter and there was a gleam in her eye as she said, “Good for you. I trust they’re taking good care of you?”

My heated cheeks surely confirmed her suspicions. “Yes, ma’am.”

Lilly leaned towards me and in sotto voice said, “Lucky girl! Well, you may end up staying in town longer than you think. There are very few unattached females in Mitford, and you’re a beauty. Those boys are into sharing their women, so if that’s your kink, you may be just what they’ve been waiting for.”

“Maybe it is. I had no idea before I met them. I thought that was just in romance novels!”

“Well, if you want the job, it’s minimum wage, and I need you here every day but Sunday, for about four hours a day. I need you to clean and restock the shelves, take book orders to the post office, and work the register if we get busy. We’re not busy very often. Most of my business is mail order.”

I nodded eagerly.

“Oh, are you good with computers?” she asked.

“No, I’m afraid not. I’d love to learn, though.”

“We have a complete set of the Wiley ‘For Dummies’ books. You can read ‘The Internet for Dummies’ on your breaks. I need a better webpage and I hate the internet with a passion!”

I smiled, charmed by her fervor. “I’ll consider it my personal mission to learn all about it.”

“Good. Lilly and Rose! What a team we’ll make. When can you start?”

“Is Monday okay? I need to talk to the guys and figure out where I’m moving. I can’t really keep staying at the firehouse…”
